The end is near. The Magicians is coming to an end after five seasons, with the series finale date set for April 2020. Here’s what we know so far.
All good things must come to an end, and that’s the case for The Magicians. Ahead of its new episode on Mar. 4, SYFY has confirmed The Magicians is canceled after five seasons.
The Season 5 finale will now act as the series finale, which will air on Apr. 1, 2020. However, fans of the series don’t need to worry too much about some major cliffhanger. According to Deadline, the season finale was written to act as a series finale, just in case. When writing, the showrunners weren’t sure whether the series would land a sixth season so wanted to be fair to the fans.
This cancellation news will come as a surprise for some. After all, the series is one of the most popular on SYFY. Despite losing 36% of its Season 4 audience and 44% of its Season 4 demo, the show remains in the middle of all SYFY shows. In fact, it’s performing better than Van Helsing, which was giving a fifth and final season renewal order not too long ago.

SYFY’s decision to cancel comes due to the lower live ratings in recent years but the rising costs to create the series. Cable networks are starting to struggle, with many scripted shows being canceled. There is a push for more unscripted shows, which could be the case for SYFY moving forward despite the previous hope to bring back the scripted programming.
Wynonna Earp will be the only show that moves past 2020, although fans are still waiting for the fourth season due to the production studio going through financial problems. SYFY is trying with more scripted shows this year, including Chucky, Resident Alien, and Vagrant Queen.
