Sea Monsters exclusive clip: Go inside the world’s largest hospital ship

NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 30: The USNS Comfort arrives at Pier 90 on March 30, 2020 in New York City. The Comfort, a naval hospital ship, is equipped to take in patients within 24 hours but will not be treating patients with COVID-19. The ship's 1,000 beds and 12 operation rooms will help ease the pressure on New York hospitals, many of which are now overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. (Photo by John Lamparski/Getty Images)

In the Sea Monsters exclusive clip, we get to see inside the ship. The clip gives us the dimensions, using items that you’ve seen either on the screen or in real life to get an idea of the size. It’s longer than the height of the Golden Gate Bridge, which certainly helps explain how it can hold 1,000 patients on one ship.

More importantly, we get to see the origins of the USNS Comfort. This ship wasn’t made to be a sailing hospital. It was designed as a crew carrier. However, the military knew it could be used for more.
