Code 8, the sci-fi thriller starring Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell, packs a lot in approximately an hour and a half, but there’s plenty of room for more.

This post contains spoilers for Code 8 which is now streaming on Netflix.

Code 8 takes superheroes in a different, intriguing direction that’s both captivating and unnerving. People with powers are ordinarily hailed as superheroes, i.e., Superman, The Flash, and Black Lightning. In the Code 8 world, individuals with powers are treated with suspicion and hostility and forced to live their lives in secret or by obtaining permits to use their powers.

It’s a spin on the tried and true, and it works. What’s unnerving, though, is that it shows how quickly people who were once indispensable (the super-powered helped build the city) can be dispensable.

More from Netflix

Like with any film, there were some dangling questions not answered in the movie and probably won’t be addressed in a sequel.  Like, why did the police let Conner (Robbie Amell) turn himself in to serve his prison sentence when he was indirectly responsible for the death of four police officers?

Or how did Nia get off the psyche? And why can’t those with powers get regular jobs that don’t require the use of their powers? Okay, it’s possible this last question will be answered in the future.

The biggest question certain to be addressed is The Trust. Who are they and why weren’t they being targeted by the police? It’s highly possible they will be the big bads in future installments of Code 8, which, by the way, won’t come in the form of a movie. Instead, Code 8 will release short sequels in ten-minute increments through the new service, Quibi.

Given the popularity of the original ten-minute short that introduced Code 8 to viewers (which you can watch below), this definitely seems like the way to go even though it does require a $4.99 per month commitment after the free trial. That’s still less than the cost of a movie ticket.

Code 8 leaves off with both the characters of Conner and Garrett (Stephen Amell) going their separate ways—one to prison and the other deeper into crime, but the door was left wide open for their paths to cross again, and supposedly, they will team up together to stop a drug trafficking ring that involves corrupt cops. This could be where The Trust comes in.

There is no word on when the first sequel will release, but given how fast Code 8 has risen in the ranks on Netflix, odds are good fans won’t have to wait very long.
