Murphy is forced to say goodbye to Max while Dean learns to work with a new partner at the police force in In the Dark Season 2, Episode 2.

In the Dark Season 2, Episode 2 is very much a transition episode from plot points introduced in the premiere episode to where we’ll go for the remainder of the season. Murphy, Felix, and Jess have to make some tough decisions this week regarding their new money-laundering scheme for Nia.

Realizing that Joy is likely to catch on to the criminal enterprise, Felix has to fire Murphy’s parents. The gang also decides on a new potential business to funnel money in and out of Guiding Hope. Elsewhere, Murphy and Max say good-bye.

Episode 2 does a good job of putting pieces on the chessboard, we’ll have to see where they get moved by season’s end. The following list recaps the most important moments from “Cross My Heart and Hope to Lie.”

5. Darnell realizes that Nia killed Jules.

More from CW

Darnell wants out of Nia’s whole scheme, but the only way she is willing to let him go free is if he kills Max for her. In the process of talking to Darnell about his new mission, she reveals that she had to take care of Dean’s last cop partner.

The revelation visibly shakes Darnell, but he has to hide it since — as far as we know — no one knew about Darnell and Jules’ relationship.

By episode’s end, Darnell obviously hasn’t killed Max, we never expected him to. But he lies to Nia and tells her the job is done when in reality, he just told Max to get the heck out of dodge. Nia says he’s free.

However, I doubt that is true. The look Nia gives Darnell as he leaves seems to imply she either knows he’s lying or has plans for him in the future. Either way, now that Darnell knows what Nia did, it’ll be interesting to see if he tries to seek revenge.
