Are you ready for a YA rom-com with a progressive and inclusive storyline? You need to watch The Half of It, now streaming on Netflix.

If you’ve been waiting for a YA rom-com that twists the tropes on their heads and brings us a progressive and inclusive storyline, Netflix has your back. The Half of It is now streaming, and it’s a must-watch.

Leah Lewis stars as Ellie Chu. On the outside, she’s a shy teen with a great business head. On the inside, she’s hiding a secret that she’s not ready to share. However, that secret may just come out when she’s asked by a jock to help him write love letters to a girl.

Now in the majority of these types of rom-coms, you’ll find that Ellie would fall in love with the jock and then try to sabotage the relationship. That’s most definitely not the case with Netflix’s The Half of It.

Instead, Ellie falls in love with the girl that she’s writing the letters to. It’s a fully inclusive storyline that takes on the rom-com tropes but gives us a story that we can believe in and support.

There are some complaints about the ending. Director Alice Wu seems to have too much going on at the same time and it’s hard to wrap it all up in the movie. However, I get the sense that there’s going to be a push for a sequel for The Half of It, which will help.

The movie has won at the Tribeca Film Festival. While the festival couldn’t happen in person, technology allowed the judges to get together and honor the great filmmakers. I’m so glad it did.

This is certainly a movie for today. It’s a movie that should have been made years ago. Now it’s a movie for others to take note of. We need more inclusive storylines.
