The standout moments from Supernatural Season 15, Episode 16

While there are only five episodes left of the series, we still get a monster-of-the-week style episode. Supernatural Season 15, Episode 16 took us back to the past, with a new couple of actors playing the young Winchesters.

The episode involved a Baba Yaga, who, according to the lore, feeds on children’s fears. Her ring, the source of the power, was broken in the attack in the past, and fixing it led to her returning. However, this wasn’t just about the creature. It was about the bonds of the past, with plenty of flashbacks to boot.

The episode opens with a man we don’t know go to a motel room. He gets a key for Room 214, and it clearly holds a dark past. He wants to believe that whatever happened in the past wasn’t true; that it was a bad dream. Sadly, that wasn’t the case.

Back to the motels

Since finding out about the Men of Letters bunker, the Winchesters don’t spend a lot of time in motels. It’s always good to see them head back there, and that’s what this episode offered.

It wasn’t just about the motel, but the connection to the past. We saw Sammy with a book of American colleges, Dean mentioning how hunting is their life, and of course, standing up for Baby.

Dean taking charge

More from CW

Young Dean immediately believes Travis about the creature. He also jumps straight into hunter mode. We see the man that he will become in this young boy, someone who refuses to accept help from anyone else. He just doesn’t want to put other people in danger, and that’s always been part of his attitude.

But Young Dean is still learning. We see him struggle with lock picking and other elements of hunting.

We also see how he deals with seeing bodies for the first time. He shoves it down the “memory hole,” but suffered through the nightmares because of it. It all sets up Dean’s personality moving forward.

Monster hunting fail

Dean was so sure that he’d killed the monster in the past. Everyone had. But it turns out that wasn’t the case.

It’s been a while since we had a monster hunting fail. Usually, fails happen when the research isn’t done. Everyone just assumes the kill worked because the monster disappears for a while.

When the monster returns, Sam points out something they should have done before. Figure out what they are actually dealing with.

Death not part of the story

Billie turns up during the episode with some news for Dean. Chuck has destroyed the last world except the one the Winchesters are in right now. That was certainly hinted at when it Mrs. Butters mentioned what the telescope does.

Now, Billie needs to know that Dean’s house is in order. She makes it clear that she isn’t part of Chuck’s story in the next stage of it. What does that mean, exactly?

Telling Sam the truth

We got to find out what Castiel told Dean at the end of the previous episode. Sure enough, it was the fact that Jack would have to sacrifice himself to save the world, and he was ready for that. Dean is so focused on ending Chuck that he is happy to go along with that.

At the end of the episode, he finally tells Sam the truth. Naturally, Sam is angry that Dean didn’t tell him about Jack’s secret right away. He’s even more angry at Dean suggesting he wouldn’t be able to handle the truth. However, at least there are no secrets right now.

The question now is whether Sam will be able to go through with the big plan at the end of Supernatural. Is he going to work against his brother in the end?
