What is Happiest Season on Hulu about?
By FS staff
Looking for a truly heartwarming, yet somewhat heartbreaking rom-com this winter? Happiest Season on Hulu could be exactly what you seek. And good news, it’s set to premiere later this week!
Actress turned director, Clea DuVall, co-wrote this stellar script with Mary Holland, and so far, it appears they’ve put together a pretty special little rom-com. So let’s take a closer look, shall we?
Decider describes Happiest Season as a holiday themed movie with “heart, soul, and more than a few laugh out loud moments.” While the critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes says this festive flick is a “jolly good time” with “heartfelt performances and more than enough holiday cheer, all you’ll want for Christmas is Happiest Season.” And we’d tend to agree.
Happiest Season synopsis
IMDb loosely describes the plot as:
"A holiday romantic comedy that captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas."

More specifically, Happiest Season tells the story of a young woman named Abby (played by Kristen Stewart) on her way to “meet the parents” and propose to her girlfriend Harper (played by Mackenzie Davis). For better or worse, she plans to do it during the family’s annual holiday dinner. But during the Christmas soiree, Abby learns her girlfriend has not told her conservative parents her true sexual orientation, making Abby and Harper’s relationship status not only more complicated, but a total secret.
Holiday hijinks are to be expected. However, don’t expect the plot to stray too far from the Christmas romantic comedy formula. As Cinema Blend reports, Happiest Season is not jam-packed with twists and turns just for the sake of it, or as Kristen Stewart once said, “It’ll work out,” in the end. Somehow, some way.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, this Christmas set rom-com was also “a personal chance” for co-writer/director, DuValll, “to explore her own place of truth” and “tell a seasonal story” from a more intimate place, as she sees it. DuVall also says that she, much like the lead in Happiest Season, has been “‘the friend at the family function” before. So while this may not be a true story, it certainly entails some very sincere true to life elements worth noting. And of course, worth watching during the holidays.
