We are halfway through August 2021 as the year continues to fly by. The summer season is coming to an end and school is starting back up so you may need your streaming fix even more than before. We’re back yet again with a shortlist of the best new Netflix movies and shows that came out this week.

If you weren’t able to stream the latest during the week, you might have missed the first entry in a new weekly docuseries, a new season of a children’s show, or one of the two movies that were already released.

There is also a hot new movie releasing this weekend starring John David Washington (Tenet). Once again we tried to give you a variety of options for your weekend binge.

Before we get into the new entries for this week, however, we have to recap last week‘s hottest entries as they are still doing well on the Netflix top 10 lists.

There were six Netflix movies and shows on our list for last weekend and 3 of them still sit in the overall top 10. Vivo, the animated feature from Sony has been a critical success as well with an 87% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes so far.

The other two were the series Hit & Run, featuring Sanaa Lathan (Love & Basketball), and the new Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami docuseries

All are worth giving a look if you missed last week’s list, and without further ado here is the list of Netflix movies and shows to binge on the weekend of Aug 13-15

New Netflix movies and shows this week

Best show this week

This week is heavy on movies but we did get the first entry in a new docuseries. Netflix has been doing more and more with weekly content and the new Untold series is the latest major foray into this area.

For the next few weeks, Netflix will be releasing one new documentary from the five-part series. This week’s entry covered the Malice at the Palace, an infamous brawl between NBA players and fans that changed the league and everyone involved’s lives.

Untold: Malice at the Palace does a great job of giving you the backstory for each key player before going through the events of that night with a level of detail we haven’t seen before. The documentary features players, reporters, and even some of the key fans who were involved.

The player’s perspective will make you see this event in a whole new light and may even get to you emotionally.

Best movie this week

Right now, the most popular title on Netflix is The Kissing Booth 3 featuring Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Joey King. However, the reviews for this entry are even worse than the reviews for the prior two and neither was able to register a fresh rating from critics or audiences.

We’re here to tell you about the best movie, not the most popular so that leaves us with John David Washington’s Beckett. Beckett is the story of an American man on the run in Greece after a tragic accident. He is hoping to get to the U.S. embassy to clear his name but the walls close in around him as he gets deeper and deeper into a web of conspiracies.

Most critics are referring to it as a run-of-the-mill conspiracy thriller so don’t set your expectations sky high and you should have a good time with this one.
