Looks like we’ve got a new Fox drama to add to our watch list. Our Kind of People, written by Karen Gist and executive produced with Lee Daniels, the series is set to take us to Oak Bluffs, an affluent Black community in Martha’s Vineyard.

There’s nothing quite like an “outsider” enfolded into the workings of a decades-old community that harbors secrets, scandal, and people as ambitious as they are powerful. It’s a recipe that will see Yaya DaCosta and Morris Chestnut trading scenes as two business-focused people with a lot on the line.

But while DaCosta’s character Angela will be navigating how to fit into Oak Bluff’s social and business scene, Chestnut’s Raymond will be a firmly placed figure, one whose wife runs things and isn’t fond of Angela.

We can’t wait to see what Our Kind of People has in store for viewers! Here’s what you can expect from the show.

Our Kind of People release date

Our Kind of People premieres Tuesday, September 21 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.

Our Kind of People cast

The cast as reported by Deadline:

Yaya Dacosta as Angela Vaughn, a hair products entrepreneur who’s an expert on style and personal care. Angela lives by the fashion principles of boho chic. She’s also got a determination streak that won’t see her putting up too long with the raised eyebrows and upturned noses of the Oak Bluffs elite.

While she wants to be accepted in their ranks, she won’t be shamed for her working-class background. Angela is a single mom making a way for herself with her daughter by her side just like her mother did before her, though she can’t say her father’s absence didn’t leave more than a little sting and hurt in her heart.

Morris Chesnut as Raymond Dupont, the husband of Leah Franklin Dupont a.k.a. the resident thorn in Angela’s side. He’s described as having the swagger and presence of Obama but in the form of a top executive at a food conglomerate.

Raymond has been having problems at work thanks to his white business partner’s mismanagement of the company. Digging his way out of that hole is proving to be difficult, though those aren’t his only issues.

While his relationship with his daughter bears on the side of sweet as he’s her rock and shoulder to lean on whenever she needs him, Raymond’s relationship with his son is strained. His son’s dream is to be a professional basketball player, but Raymond barely entertains the idea. It’s causing friction in their lives.

Alana Bright as Nikki Vaughn, Angela’s 17-year old daughter. She’s a spoken word poet who’s strong in her convictions and sense of self. Losing her grandmother, however, has shaken her to her core. But as she grows into her new place in Oak Bluffs and makes friends, Nikki begins to feel comfortable and confident in her skin again.

Nadine Ellis as Leah Franklin Dupont, a businesswoman with the confidence and elegance necessary to lead the Oak Bluffs community along with her husband, Raymond. Leah is aware that the perch they’re placed on is precarious and comes with overwhelming pressure, but someone has to lead, and she intends on that remaining her family.

Angela’s arrival throws Leah’s carefully laid plans in disarray and threatens the legacy she’s worked so hard to build which is something she just can’t have. If that means standing against the newcomer and barring her from Oak Bluff society then so be it. All Black folk aren’t kinfolk, and though Leah feels a responsibility to enrich and foster their community, that doesn’t have to extend to a woman who is very much in her way.

Rhyon Nicole Brown as Lauren Dupont, Leah and Richmond’s daughter. Lauren is privileged, beautiful, and a queen bee in her own right in Oak Bluffs. She’s also a social media influencer and used to being the focus of attention which hasn’t had a positive affect on her manners.

Her first encounter with Nikki goes terribly as the newcomer isn’t afraid to stand up to her, and the animosity worsens when Nikki stumbles upon Lauren’s well-kept secret. She’s coming into herself as a queer woman of color, and that’s a personal journey people aren’t aware that she’s on.

Joe Morton as Teddy Franklin, Leah’s father whose ruthlessness in the sanitation business has earned his family the fortune they’re currently sitting on.

A point of contention between him and his daughter are his business practices which have seen him buy Black properties for virtual pennies. But this charismatic, incredibly intelligent businessman has no qualms reminding her that despite all her protesting and disgust, his business still paid for the life she knows and loves.

Teddy is also connected to Angela’s past in way that could have repercussions for the family if it’s revealed.

Kyle Bary as Quincy Dupont, Lauren’s fraternal twin who’s more easygoing than she is. Quincy has dreams of becoming a professional basketball player but his father, Richmond, has other ideas for him. He’s meant to fall in his footsteps and take up the family business whether that’s the direction he wants his life to go or not.

Lance Gross as Tyrique Freeman, a businessman whose fortune in construction is newly established. Tyrique has finally cemented his place in Oak Bluffs after growing up with modest means. While he’s not afraid to rock the boat by coming to Angela’s defense when she first arrives, Tyrique also warns her that if she wants a seat at the table, she’ll need to play the same game they all do. If helping her has them growing closer to one another, well, Tyrique isn’t opposed to it.

Debbie Morgan as Patricia “Aunt Piggy” Williams, Angela’s aunt who moves to Oak Bluffs along with her nieces. Patricia is a working class woman who says what needs to be said. She also doles out advice that’s wise and exactly what Angela needs in this new overwhelming situation. But, Aunt Piggy is hiding more than one secret including a connection to this community.

L. Scott Caldwell as Olivia Sturgess Dupont, Richmond’s mother who’s quite fond of her son, but hard on his wife, Leah. As the matron of the Oak Bluffs society, she’s bestowed The Graceties, the community’s social club, onto her daughter-in-law. It comes with stipulations, however, like a push to see Angela out of the Bluffs for good no matter what needs to be done to make that happen.

Raven Goodwin as Josephine, Angela’s college roommate who is a part of the Oak Bluffs community herself. With an easy and fun spirit, Josephine wants to welcome her friend into the Bluffs without too much trouble but as close-knit as the community is, that’s going to be a challenge.

Nicole Chanel Williams as Taylor, Lauren’s best friend. She loves to have fun and is amused by the way Nikki’s arrival has shaken up her friend group.
