Has cooking series Selena + Chef been canceled by Max?

Selena + Chef season 4 gave us plenty of lighter, summer recipes to choose from! During the season, the actress and singer took her culinary skills on the road and to Malibu for some summer-filled episodes. Now, it seems like she’s a pro in the kitchen, and she’s taking those skills to the Food Network! While that’s exciting, what does that mean for Selena + Chef?

Season 4 premiered Aug. 18, 2022 on Max and saw chefs Ludo Lefebvre, Kristen Kish, Rachael Ray, the one and only Gordon Ramsay, and more. Like previous seasons, all the talented chefs chose a charity for Selena and the show to donate to.

If you’re a fan of HBO Max (soon to become just Max on May 23), then you know the platform is going through a revamp of sorts and its parent company Warner Bros. has now merged with Discovery. Does this new partnership effect Selena + Chef? Is that why she’s going to the Food Network?

Has Selena + Chef been canceled by Max?

In 2022, Max started making changes and quietly removing movies from the streamer, and the highly-anticipated Batgirl was completely shelved despite it being almost ready. For some time, we also thought that unscripted shows were safe as the newly merged company said those would be their focus. But, unfortunate layoffs and cuts started happening due to budget and some shows were sold to FAST channels.

So what does this mean for Selena + Chef? Well, we’ve been waiting since August 2022, when the last episode of season 4 was released, for updates on whether a season 5 is happening. Unfortunately at the time of this writing on May 17, 2023, the show has not been canceled or renewed yet.

Another factor to consider is the star’s new commitment with the Food Network! According to Deadline, the singer and actress has signed up to do two cooking shows on the channel. The two are still untitled, but we can expect the first show to come out later this year in 2023 that will be a “celebration-focused series just in time for the holidays,” per the news outlet. The second is set to debut in 2024 and will see Selena visiting some of the best chefs in the U.S. and cooking their most popular dishes.

Deadline reports that due to the two new shows, it’s not clear whether she’ll also still be able to do Selena + Chef on Max. It would be a real shame if the cooking show was canceled. It’s really fun with a unique take!
