Will Smith Oscar wins: How many Academy Awards does he have and for what?

Since 2022, actor Will Smith has been associated with the Oscars. But unfortunately, it’s not for a good reason. After the incident everyone knows about that happened last year, was the actor nominated for a 2023 Academy Award?

The answer to that is, no. Smith does have a film that would have been eligible, and that’s Apple TV+ movie Emancipation. The actor plays the role of a real-life slave, Peter, who escapes his captors and has to face the Louisiana swamps and slave catchers who are chasing him. However the Oscars did not nominate the film or actor in any category.

The ceremony airs Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. This year’s nominees in the Best Actor category include Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal, and Bill Nighy. While Smith wasn’t nominated this year, has he been recognized by the Academy before?

Oscar wins: How many Academy Awards does Will Smith have?

Over the years, the actor has won one Academy Award. This was in 2022 in the Best Actor category for his role as Richard Williams in the film, King Richard. Including this 2022 win, Smith has been nominated a total of three times. The other two he almost took home in the Best Actor category were for 2002 biographical sports drama Ali, and then once again in 2007 for his role as Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness.

Though 2022 he finally won a much-deserved award, unfortunately that was shadowed by his choice to slap Chris Rock, who was onstage presenting an award, after the actor and comedian made a joke about Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Because of this, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor resigned from the Academy and he is not allowed to attend any of the organization’s events for the next 10 years – including the Oscars. However, he and his projects can continue to be nominated and potentially win.
