We’re super excited to let you know that the long-awaited sequel to Shazam has finally arrived! Shazam! Fury of the Gods has premiered and is exclusively available to watch in theaters nationwide right now!

The superhero action film had its world premiere at the Fox Village Theatre in Los Angeles on March 14 and began its nationwide theatrical run on March 17. The movie was written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, directed by David F. Sandberg, and produced by New Line Cinema, DC Studios, and Peter Safran.

Reviews have always been an indicator of whether or not the average movie-goer should go out and see a film. Especially for a movie from this large of a franchise, I can already anticipate people are wanting to find out what to expect or what not to expect before buying a ticket. If you’re reading this, then you must be one of those moviegoers.

Read on to get the inside scoop on if Shazam! Fury of the Gods is worthy of getting yourself off your couch and taking a trip to your local movie theater!

Is Shazam! Fury of the Gods worth watching?

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is way more charming and cheeky than it is super and serious. Shazam, alternately played by Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, continued to portray the character as he’s supposed to, a young boy in a superhero body who is given much more power than he can handle.

Sandberg directs a script that takes the sentimental tone of the first film and couples it with the world-altering storyline and fight scenes that fans were anticipating while still being really funny and slightly campy. With the addition of the three daughters Hespera, Kalypso, and Anthea played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler respectively into the story, it became a more exciting film to watch. Liu plays the perfect villan as she embodies the role of Kalypso, the most power-hungry of the three sisters who will stop at nothing to regain the control that their father had lost after he passed.

The addition of Zegler, who we will continue to see more of in future franchise projects, was a breath of fresh air to see, a young actress who has already hit her stride as the lead in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, was able to showcase some of her comedic abilities while not straying to far away from her character’s motive of undoing the wrong that has been done.

What stood out to me aside from the incredible acting performances by all members of the Shazamily specifically Jack Dylan Grazer, Faithe Herman, and Ian Chen, was the visual effects. It’s mind blowing how many people are involved in creating these fantastical elements that we see on screen while still maintaining that the movie is centered around navigating having a chosen family and understanding that change is inevitable.

I really enjoyed the references made throughout the film not just in terms of pop culture but to other DC characters as well. Also, no spoilers but that post-credits scene had me in stitches. It’s always a good time to stay back and watch the reactions of the movie-goers who didn’t expect to see one.

The movie is definitely worth the watch despite what other reviews may say. I highly recommend seeing the movie even if it didn’t do as well as the first one. It’s nice if you’ve already seen the first one but hey, you don’t have to be a hardcore DC fan to watch this one. Don’t let that stop you if you’re looking for a family-friendly movie to watch with others in the theater this weekend.
