The CW is in an era of transition. That’s been the name of the game since word came down that majority ownership of the network was up for grabs and CW’s parent companies–Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery–would be keeping a stake of 12.5% each. As such the 2022 cancellation spree saw the loss of 13 television series in one year, many of which had been staples for years on the network. 2023 didn’t let up as more shows were scheduled to come to an end or were canceled.

Then the WGA and SAG-AFTRA went on strike, grinding the majority of the entertainment industry to a halt. For The CW, this didn’t change much for what was already coming in the fall thanks to their predominately acquisition and unscripted heavy schedule. However, that doesn’t mean fans weren’t disappointed as three staples were noticeably absent. Here are the best CW shows not coming this year.

All American

This teen sports drama, which got its start in 2018, has only missed the Fall TV season once and this was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 3 debuted in January 2021 and didn’t finish until July of that same year.

Over the course of its run, All American has garnered a devoted fan base, whether they watched the show from the beginning or began streaming it on Netflix before making the leap to watching it live. October won’t be the same without the football series which began depicting the college and post-high school life of its main characters in season 4.

Season 6, depending on when the strikes end, will likely premiere in the early months of 2024 instead of being held for the spring or summer. Given the network’s shift toward sports, particularly football given Inside the NFL‘s launch on The CW starting Sept. 5 and its deal with the Atlantic Coast Conference to air college football games, with the first game to kick off on Sept. 9, this series will be the first to go back into production.

There’s as of yet untapped marketing crossover with All American and The CW’s sports coverage strategy that could prove beneficial for series which is one of the top draws on the network. We doubt, in this new era for CW, that Nexstar is willing to keep the Warner Bros. produced drama on the bench for long once a suitable deal is reached between the AMPTP and the writers and actors unions currently striking.
