Priscilla tells the tale of the grand romance between one of the most iconic musicians of all time and his young bride. But just who plays the iconic couple in this new drama?
There have been a score of movies made about Elvis Presley, as the King of Rock and Roll is still arguably the most influential rock star of all time. However, this new drama, written, directed and produced by Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola, takes a different tack.
The story is told from the perspective of Priscilla Beaulieu, who was 14 when she met Elvis Presley in 1959. At the time, Presley was taking a break from his music career for military service and they hit it off well despite the age gap. After years of living together, they were married in 1966, eventually having daughter Lisa Marie.
The pair remained together until 1973, when they engaged in a bitter divorce, with Priscilla accusing Elvis of drug use and outbursts. She was, however, heartbroken when Elvis died in 1977.
Since then, Priscilla has moved on to various enterprises, from a clothing line to acting in The Naked Gun movies and serves as a producer on the film. So, who plays her and Elvis on screen?
The cast for Priscilla
Playing Priscilla is Cailee Spaeny, who broke out in Pacific Rim: Uprising with roles in Mare of Easttown, The Craft: Legacy and others. Taking the daunting task of playing Elvis is Jacob Elordi, best known for Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies and Nate on Euphoria. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Elordi acknowledged how tricky it was to play Elvis without becoming just an impression.
"“I’m pretty lucky to kind of be in his register anyway. But I think, for me, it was trying to invent what he would sound like behind closed doors, because everyone has a performing voice and a speaking voice.”"
Likewise, Spaeny talked to the real Priscilla to aid her performance. “I had lots of different conversations with her before I started filming, how she was toeing that line between being supportive, but also speaking her mind.” It’s likely this inside knowledge will aid the pair in their performances.
The cast also includes Dagmara Domińczyk as Priscilla’s mother and Dan Beirne as Joe Esposito, Elvis’s long-time road manager.
