The later half of 2023 has certainly been interesting as the writers strike and actors strike caused delays in many movies and shows. That means us broadcast fans didn’t get the traditional fall TV we’re so used to having this time around. The delays also caused most series to be pushed to 2024, with a limited amount of new projects to look forward to. Before the year closes though, get ready for new comedy Extended Family!

NBC is actually the rare network of having aired some new shows during the strikes, including Found and The Irrational. Well, now the this upcoming multi-camera family sitcom is joining. Extended Family premieres Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. You can also expect a special holiday episode of Night Court starring The Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rauch afterwards at 8:30 p.m.

But Saturdays aren’t going to be the permanent time slot for the comedy. The show is then going to move to another day of the week. What day is that? How many episodes can you expect to see? Who stars in the series? Read on below for all the details!

All about the comedy series

The multi-camera family sitcom is centered around Jim and Julia, a couple who has come to an “amicable divorce,” per the synopsis. The former couple decides it would be best for the two kids to grow up in the family home. And so, each parent takes a turn on who stays with them. Things get a bit more complicated for Jim when Trey, owner of his favorite sports team, meets Julia and wins his ex-wife’s heart.

Was Extended Family affected by the strikes?

With the show debuting at the end of December, you might be wondering whether production was affected at all from the Hollywood strikes. The answer is, yes. But not to the degree of other series that didn’t even get any filming done.

According to Deadline, the comedy had finished filming six of the 13 episodes before the actors strike went into effect on July 14, 2023. Now that the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative agreement, actors can get back to work and productions can start back up again.

The news outlet shares that just four days after the actors strike ended on Nov. 9, 2023, production on Extended Family started back up again right away on Nov. 13. This makes sense as there’s still seven episodes that the comedy needs to film. The good news is that sitcoms don’t take as long to film and edit in post-production like dramas and other genres.
