5 characters we need to see back in the SWAT series finale (except for Nichelle)

With SWAT coming to an end, here are five past characters from the show we need back for the series finale!
“Life” – 20-Squad faces down a prison hostage situation, only to be thrown into deeper danger when a bomb explodes, freeing maximum-security prisoners from their cells, including someone with a personal grudge against Hondo, on S.W.A.T., Friday, Nov. 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. SWAT is coming to an end and before it does, there are five characters we want to see back! Sadly, one we would love to see back is confirmed as not available, so we've ruled her out.

Fans of SWAT have twice gone through CBS announcing the show was being canceled. However, it looks like this time it’s for real, with the series planned to end in May with its eighth season. Thankfully, that’s given the producers time to craft a real finale, and hopefully, that means bringing back a few past faces.

The show has seen a few cast members come and go over the years and several deserve some closure. Sadly, it’s confirmed Rochelle Aytes won’t be able to reprise her role as Nichelle before the finale (due to her starring on Watson). There are also some other fun characters that would be good to see return for the swan song episodes. So, before SWAT comes to an end, here are five characters we’d love to see return!

Addicted
“Addicted” – The SWAT team races to stop a gunman targeting rehab centers and those he considers responsible for his brother’s death. Also, Deacon is caught off guard when his wife, Annie (Bre Blair), makes a parenting decision that has unexpected consequences for their daughter, on S.W.A.T., Friday, Feb. 3 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Street

Jim Street rose well in SWAT from an eager rookie to a capable leader. Street’s arc was well done with his handling of his addict mother and his experiences in a tough life pushing him on. He got a good sendoff as he took up leadership of a SWAT team in San Diego and revealed he was going to propose to Chris.

Having the team travel to San Diego on a case would be a logical way to bring Street back. It’d be wonderful to see Hondo and Deacon treating Street as a true equal and admiring how far he’s come. It’d be a heartwarming sendoff for Street to become a true commander in his own right to mark his long journey on the show.

Luca

When the producers figured season 7 was going to be the end, they crafted what seemed to be final sendoffs for characters. That included Luca, who was shot by a random crook and his injuries meaning he could no longer be on SWAT. Unable to take a desk job, he retired from the force.

Luca deserves a real farewell and a happier ending. Maybe he’s made his security company a success and managed to let go of no longer being a cop. It might also be good to link back up with his half-sister and family. Luca got a bit of short shrift in his farewell so this would be a fine way to make amends and give him a more deserving goodbye for SWAT fans.

"Armory" -- As Hondo and SWAT work to de-escalate a hostage situation in which an ex-convict is holding a local family captive, the mission takes a dangerous turn that impacts the team. Also, when Street tires of his complicated romantic entanglements, he agrees to let Chris make over his online dating profile, on S.W.A.T., Thursday, April 12 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Chris

As long as we’re bringing back Street, we might as well have Chris. We still need to know if she said yes to Street’s proposal and how she’s handling a new life. She carried a lot of baggage with her many issues, so it’d be good to see her in a better mental place and free of her burdens.

If anything is a perfect final scene for the show, it’d be the entire squad turning out for Street and Chris’s wedding. It’ll be fabulous as the capper for the show and the payoff for their long relationship as well as the happiest ending any fan could ask for.

"Stigma" -- Hondo and the SWAT team race to save Buck (Louis Ferreira), their former unit leader, when he goes off grid and they fear he plans to harm himself. Flashbacks reveal the search for Buck, which coincides with one of the team's most brutal missions, as each team member receives counseling and discusses the untold mental and emotional difficulties inherent to working in SWAT, on S.W.A.T., Wednesday, April 8 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Buck Spivey

The pilot for SWAT opened with Buck Spivey as the commander, who stepped down after accidentally shooting a kid with Hondo taking over. Spivey made more appearances in the show, including a powerful episode where his PTSD from his career nearly drove him to suicide. He’s thankfully better now.

Having Spivey popping back up for the last episodes would bring the saga full circle. He can aid with information on a case or perhaps take up a new position in the LAPD. As SWAT started with Spivey, having it end with him only makes sense.

Jessica Cortez

This might be a reach, but if SWAT is bringing back old faces, Jessica Cortez's return might be a fun twist. The captain was the original boss of the squad when the series premiered, a former girlfriend of Hondo’s, but they broke it off when he got promoted. A tough cop, Cortez tried to navigate the issues of the public and the LAPD and often butting heads with her superiors.

The character left in season 3 to join the FBI. This could be an interesting way to bring her back with Cortez dropping back to LAPD for a case and a reunion with Hondo. Stephanie Sigman can be a nice face for a return and it’d be another way to close the door on SWAT by bringing back an original cast member.

SWAT season 8 airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS.
