Grey’s Anatomy is coming back for the second half of Season 21 so here’s a reminder where we left off!
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy are used to the show taking breaks at midseason. This one has been longer, as Season 21 left off in December of 2024 and only returned on March 6. Thankfully, when it comes back, Grey’s will run all the way through May with no breaks.
That’s a great move, considering there were a lot of plots left up in the air when we last saw the doctors of Grey-Sloan hospital, so here’s a quick recap of Season 21 so far!

Goodbye Levi
It’s always something when a longtime cast member departs, but a bit of a surprise that Schmitt (Jake Borelli) was departing before the midseason finale. At least the nerdy doctor got a great sendoff. After being offered a big residency job at the hospital, Schmitt revealed he’d landed a bigger internship at a hospital in Texas.
He bid farewell to Jo and then a pleasant surprise as his boyfriend James announced he was quitting his job to move with Schmitt. So Levi has a new love and a great new job, making him one of the happier Grey’s departures. Which is better than what happened to another…

Farewell to Mika
It had been announced that Midori Francis was leaving the series, which was sad as her Mika had been getting some good stuff at last. That included a romance with Jules (Adelaide Kane) and the pair getting closer. Then, a sleep-deprived Mika was driving her ill sister when she fell asleep at the wheel and got into a brutal crash.
Mika pulled through after a brief coma, only to learn her sister had died of complications. She tried to get back to work but couldn’t handle seeing others near death. Despite Jules begging her to stay, Mika quit the hospital and departed, cutting her time on the show short.

Ben returned to Grey's Anatomy
Amid the departures, we got a new arrival to Grey’s. With his tenure as a firefighter and paramedic on Station 19 done, Bailey’s husband Ben (Jason George) became a full doctor and member of the staff, working alongside his wife for some nice drama.
Bailey herself had briefly been removed as head of the ward but, of course, got her job back and soon whipped the interns back into shape.

Meredith and Catherine made Richard mad
Meredith was still upset about Catherine trying to take over her Alzheimer’s research. She then learned Catherine’s cancer had worsened and so struck a “deal” to keep her condition quiet from Richard, who had returned to the OR after giving the Chief of Surgery role to Teddy. That involved hiring back the various doctors Catherine had fired for aiding Meredith’s research.
Eventually, Richard discovered the truth about Catherine’s condition and outraged the two, and Bailey had kept it quiet from him. While he seems to have calmed down to help Catherine, there’s a bit of iciness between Richard and Meredith.

Teddy found an interesting connection
After being rehired, Teddy and Owen were conflicted about their hard work, with Teddy becoming Chief of Surgery. On a night out, she bonded with fellow doctor Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush), who had an open relationship with her husband. Cass then kissed Teddy, who brushed it off.
Teddy tried to laugh it off to Owen, only for Owen to be upset about his wife with another woman. He and Beckman worked together on a case and seemed okay only for Owen to look jealous seeing Beckman and Teddy together.

Blue got a second chance
Just as Blue was getting himself back on track, his ex-fiancee Molly returned to his life. The pair had been in love until Molly lost her memory in a car accident, and Kwan felt it was better to let her go for her new life. She showed up as part of a mass disaster now engaged to another man.
Slowly, Molly began regaining her memories of Kwan and confronted him. At first, Kwan tried to push her away, but the pair ended up back together, ignoring the issue of Molly having another man.

Winston was heartbroken
After his divorce from Maggie, Winston tried to get back on track working at the hospital. He was mentored by Richard and reconnected with Skye, a woman he’d “ghosted” who needed help for her ill son.
Despite Winston and Amelia’s best efforts, the baby appeared to die, rocking Winston.

Who got shot in the Grey's Anatomy season 21 fall finale?
The big cliffhanger from the midseason finale was a massive heat wave hitting Seattle. Jo (pregnant with twins) and Lucas went to a convenience store to get extra ice, only to be caught in a robbery. It left off with Lucas tackling the gunman and a gunshot going off.
The first promos and images for the show’s return have Jo wheeled into the ER, although it’s uncertain if she was shot or had pregnancy complications. Either way, Link is going to be rocked while the rest try to save another victim, who could be Lucas.
There’s also Jules handling Mika’s departure, things are still tense between Richard and Meredith, and Winston is fighting to save that baby. Down the road, Lena Waithe will be doing a stint as a new doctor, and we may get more of the possible simmering romance between Amelia and Monica (Natalie Morales).
So Grey’s Anatomy is going to be as wild as ever when it returns for another bold year!
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
