Einstein isn’t premiering until 2027, but star Matthew Gray Gubler already has a plan to bring one of his famous Criminal Minds co-stars into it!
CBS has announced its 2026-27 schedule, which, as usual, holds some shows back for the mid-season. Among them is Einstein, a new procedural drama that’s been in the works for a couple of years. The concept is fitting for CBS’s offbeat procedural style, as the great-grandson of Albert Einstein is just as brilliant a scientist but also has a “bad boy” reputation. When that gets him in trouble with the law, he works it off by using his intellect to help a detective solve crimes.
Playing the lead is Matthew Gray Gubler, best known for his role as Spencer Reid on CBS’s long-running Criminal Minds, which still continues as a Paramount+ exclusive. Gubler played the role for the first 15 seasons of the show and returned in the later Paramount+ revival.
Among the cast was Shemar Moore as Derek Morgan. He left the series after 11 seasons and is better known now for his role as Hondo on SWAT. Speaking to Us Weekly at the CBS Fest, Gubler revealed he already has plans to try to get Moore to cameo on Einstein.
“There’s only one person I went on from Criminal Minds, and it’s every single one. I feel lucky to be back on the tiny little TV screen again and I hope they’ll all come back. I’ve already reached out to all of them. We gotta get Shemar [Moore] on there shirtless though, right?”
There had been buzz on the possibility of Moore rejoining Criminal Minds when SWAT was briefly canceled in 2023, only for the series to be surprisingly renewed. The actor was last seen in season 15 and is currently filming the SWAT: Exiles spinoff, but a reunion with Gubler would be fun.

Besides Moore, there’s a chance some of Gubler’s other Criminal Minds co-stars can appear, like A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Joe Mantegna, or Kirsten Vangsness. Having some of them pop up as criminals for Gubler to go up against would be more fun.
Gubler isn’t alone, as co-starring in the series is Melissa Fumero as Detective Robbi Paris, who is hoping that some of her co-stars from the cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine can appear. “Anybody [would be great], but I’d love to get Stephanie [Beatriz] on the show.”
The series is still filming, and the buzz is that it will resemble the hit Elsbeth in focusing mainly on Gubler and Fumero as they solve crimes with a revolving pack of guest stars as the killers of the week. That opens the door to such cameos, and it would be funny to have former cast members of both actors popping up.
We’ll see if it happens, but Criminal Minds fans would adore seeing such a reunion finally happen on screen!
Einstein premieres on CBS in 2027.
