NCIS fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of season 22, but it may be a hard one for Jessica Knight! Here’s what we know!

Season 21 was a tough for fans and not just because it was delayed for months by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. First, the team had to bid a sad farewell to Ducky (the late David McCallum). Then Jessica (Katrina Law) had her father drop by to help with a case, and it turned out that she had never told him that she was dating Jimmy (Brian Dietzen).

Jessica’s dad was near obsessed with making sure she stuck to “the plan” to keep up her career to eventually become NCIS director. That came up in the season finale when Jessica was offered a big promotion training the REACT team in San Diego. After she and Parker barely survived being locked in a sinking ship, Jessica agreed to take the job.

That’s led to fans worried about a possible break-up between Jessica and Jimmy, who had seemed to support her boosting her career but obviously was not happy about the move her new position required. There’s also a question if this means Law will leave the show or if Jessica is coming back.

Previewing season 22 for TVLine, showrunner Steven D. Binder shared the show jumps ahead a few months with Jessica settling into San Diego. It should come as no shock that Jessica’s new job has her in serious trouble.

"We’re going to find her out there in San Diego, and she’s going to have gotten into some trouble. Fitting trouble for someone who’s a hostage negotiator. And that throws the whole trajectory of everything up in the air."

Empty Nest
“Empty Nest” – NCIS searches for a missing undercover agent in the midst of an active hostage situation, on the 22nd season premiere of the CBS Original series NCIS, Monday, Oct. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. The first look image CBS has released of Jessica in the season 22 premiere, "Empty Nest," teases what she's been up to though the tactical gear has left us with even more questions. It should be a big plot for the team to rescue Jessica, but they may have their own issues to distract them.

What else is coming in NCIS season 22?

As it happens, the team is a bit out of sorts without Jessica. Jimmy is obviously distracted without her, Torres is on an undercover assignment, and McGee is angling for a deputy director's spot. Thus, as Binder puts it, “Papa Bird Parker has an empty nest.”

As it happens, Parker will be “set on a journey” of his own, perhaps connected to the mysterious Lily, the girl he hallucinated seeing while trapped in the ship. Parker claimed to Jessica that he had no idea who she was but that Lily was clearly somehow tied to his past.

On top of that, Binder hints that Vance gets a fun episode spotlight when his work in a delicate negotiation is thrown off by a former love interest appearing. That's on top of a possible crossover with the upcoming Tony & Ziva spinoff and likely a few more surprises down the line.

So it looks like NCIS is hitting season 22 running for another fantastic year for one of TV’s biggest hits.

NCIS season 22 premieres Monday October 14 at 8/7c on CBS.
