Could The Rookie use a new mom-centric spinoff? A couple of its stars have given the idea that fans might enjoy it!

The Rookie is getting set for its seventh season, which is usually a time when a show may be worried about coming to an end. The title itself seems off as the main character, Nolan (Nathan Fillion), is no longer a rookie but a top officer. He has taken to training his own rookie, Celina Jaurez (Lisseth Chavez) and the show does a good job focusing on the lives of the cops.

There have been some romantic turns like the sad breakup of cops Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). The season 6 finale hinted there might be a reconciliation but nothing for sure yet.

Speaking to TVLine at the 2024 San Diego Comic Con, O’Neil talked about season 7 alongside co-stars Mekia Cox (who plays Nyla Harper) and Alyssa Diaz (who plays Angela Lopez). They mentioned how they do hope Chen and Bradford reconciled but couldn’t give more details.

Diaz did share that season 7 “will delve into relationships a lot more” but warned that this may include “some bumpy roads.”

O’Neill added that “we’re going to see everybody’s houses, see how the family life is going…” which is a good way to focus more on the cops.

Season 6 was limited to only 10 episodes due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. That meant having to compress things for the overall arc of a conspiracy to corrupt cops run by the sinister lawyer Monica Stevens (Bridget Reagan), who managed to escape. With season 7 now being a full 18 episodes and set to air in early 2025, this offers more chances to look into the personal lives of the cops.

But there's bigger news! The ladies hinted at the idea of a spinoff many fans can go with.

The Rookie stars dream up a spinoff

As one of ABC’s biggest hits, it’s no surprise the network has tried a spinoff of The Rookie. The Rookie: Feds aired in 2022 with Niecy Nash heading up an FBI unit. It was a good show with several crossover episodes with the main Rookie series. Sadly, it ended up being a casualty of the 2023 Hollywood strikes and was canceled after just one season.

Several characters from Feds did pop up in the season 6 finale to show there’s still a connection between the shows. But talking at Comic Con, Cox and Diaz shared how fans were pushing for a spinoff focusing on Harper and Lopez.

“It’s called Cop Moms,” Cox proposed, with Diaz adding her own tagline: “[It’s about] them being moms, being cops — which one is more dangerous?!”

This could be a cool idea, as one of the best parts of the show is watching Harper and Lopez bond on the job and proving how great they are as detectives. It’s also fun seeing them balance it with mom duties, as both women have been known to keep working on cases even when literally going into labor.

It wouldn’t need to be that huge a break from the main Rookie show as the two ladies can be assigned to a special unit of the LAPD, thus the challenge of proving themselves to new colleagues who don’t know how good they are. There can be appearances from the main Rookie cops and give a lot more focus to Lopez and Harper off the job.

It could be only a dream for now, yet there’s some fun potential as many a Rookie fan would love seeing Harper and Lopez get their own show to show how great this pairing is as both cops and mothers.

The Rookie season 7 premieres early 2025 on ABC.
