5 Things We Can Never Unsee From ‘Santa Clarita Diet’

Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix is full of gratuitous blood and gore, and, as a result, it will probably make you lose your appetite. Just call it the Santa Clarita Diet diet.

More from Netflix

You probably shouldn’t eat anything while you watch the first few episodes of Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix… unless you want a HUGE amount of vomit all over your favorite couch.

Seriously. The nausea factor associated with Santa Clarita Diet is a disclaimer in many reviews, and it’s already plastered all over Twitter. The show follows Shelia (Drew Barrymore), a sweet suburban lady who suddenly dies and gets a taste for human flesh, and it doesn’t pull any punches with the gore. Because Shelia is our heroine, we’re rooting for her while simultaneously watching her do some of the most downright physically repulsive things on a TV show in the history of the medium. And I’m including Keeping Up with the Kardashians here.

The gross out factor of Shelia’s journey is at times gratuitous, but always in keeping with the wonderfully weird tone of the show. Bodily fluids flow freely, and body parts are gnawed with abandon. As a result, there are some images that Santa Clarita Diet have been burned into our brains, possibly for eternity. In particular, there are five sickening scenes that we can never unsee from this quirky Netflix original.

Warning: If you haven’t seen the first seven episodes of Santa Clarita Diet, you might not want to proceed any further. Here be spoilers.

A HUGE Amount of Vomit

Like a lot of vomit. Minutes into the very first episode, Shelia has a vomittastic episode that leaves her dead. A little vomit, sure, we can handle, but her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) finds her literally wading in an ocean of the stuff on the floor of a newly renovated bathroom. And it’s not the fake split pea soup stuff, either. There’s a viscous, phlegmy stew of slime and chunks covering every single surface of the room.

The sea of barf is a gross out gag (pun intended) that’s repeated a few episodes later when Shelia accidentally bites a vicious drug dealer named Loki (Deobia Oparei) during an attack and inadvertently turns him into an undead entity. We have no idea what the cleaning bill was like in either situation, but get us away from that stuff ASAP.

Shelia Goes Savage

Within three episodes, Sheila brutally attacks and kills two large men all by her lonesome. In particular, Shelia’s first kill involves the element of surprise when she attacks would-be sexual predator, Gary (a gloriously sleazy Nathan Fillion).

In a moment of girl power, Shelia flips the script on the creepy moment and promptly bites off Gary’s two fingers. As Gary screams about his missing digits, he watches in horror as Shelia actually chews and swallows them with gusto. To be sure, the sight of her tiny frame attacking a giant dude is pretty hilarious, but the massive amount of blood dribbling out of her face and the crunch of bones is something we can’t easily wipe from our memory.

A Botched Burial

If only they could have located the lid. Santa Clarita Diet does well to integrate trivial domestic annoyances throughout the series, and here a missing lid for a storage container causes some serious problems. As Shelia and Joel try to move the what remains of Gary’s body, they spill the Jello-like sludge all over the ground. Body parts, viscera, and blood gush out in an ocean of disgusting.

While it’s a moment we can’t forget, it does teach us a lesson about the importance of organizing when it comes to potential murder tools.

Foul Foot

When Joel gets desperate to feed his hungry wife, he brings her to the morgue for an expensive dinner. Because the family is on a budget, they’re unable to afford an entire body, and Shelia ends up gnawing on a lone, bluish foot. This sequence doubles down on the gross factor because the foot has not only been dead and rotting for awhile, but it’s also pumped full of formaldehyde, making it so not organic.

Shelia gamely tries to eat the foot, and tentatively snaps off a tendon with her teeth. As she chews it, her face morphs from curious to disgusted real quick. She holds the giant foot in her two petite hands and contemplates it as Joel pleads with her to finish her meal. She can’t, and, as a result, we simultaneously lose our appetites for the foreseeable future.

Bathtub Buffet

Shelia’s biggest challenge comes in the form of Dan (Ricardo Chavira), her 200 lb douchebag neighbor. After Joel kills Dan in a fit of anger, it’s up to Shelia to hide the evidence… in her belly. She thinks she’s up for the task and starts gnawing away with abandon.

Unfortunately, Dan is really hairy, so we’re treated to a visual of Shelia coughing up a giant, bloody hairball. This results in an insanely wacky sequence where Joel shaves Dan’s furry leg while Shelia continues her food quest. Wild.

The actual Santa Clarita Diet might not be a feasible option for, well, anyone in their right mind, but  watching the series will certainly give you a whole host of images to call upon whenever you’re contemplating that extra slice of pizza or second helping of Chinese food. Just call it the Santa Clarita Diet diet.
