Up until this point in Supernatural Season 1, we’d just seen vengeful spirits physically attack. This episode showed a more psychological attack.

When Dean and Sam are pulled towards an abandoned asylum, they learn more about vengeful spirits than they ever wanted. They also learn more about each other.

A doctor calls

To open the Supernatural Season 1 episode “Asylum,” we get the case for the week. When police are called to the abandoned asylum in town, one is infected. He returns home to kill his wife and then kill himself.

The Winchesters don’t actually learn about this incident through the news. They get a text message with coordinates from their father. When in Rockford, Illionois, they learn that the cop that was involved in the murder-suicide had been in the south wing of the asylum.

Sure enough, John’s journal is packed with information about the south wing. More importantly, it has information about some kids who disappeared from there back in 1972. A quick look around the asylum helps the Winchesters learn about James Ellicott, son of Sanford Ellicot, the former Chief of Staff.

It doesn’t take long to learn the back story, after Sam poses as a new patient for James Ellicott. In 1964, the patients in the asylum rioted and Sanford was killed. However, his body was never found.

The Winchesters save a girl…and a boy

When the Winchesters go back to the asylum, they’re not alone. Kat’s boyfriend Gavin took her there on a date. Now they’ve been split up, and they need to find him. When Sam finds Gavin, Gavin shares that a ghost kissed him.

Meanwhile, Kat finds herself trapped in a room with one of the ghosts. Dean can’t open the door, and it’s Sam who figures out the ghosts don’t want to harm Kat. They want to talk to her; tell her the truth of what happened. The ghost only says “137” before disappearing and letting Kat out of the room.

The Winchesters realize this has to be a room, so Sam remains with Kat and Gavin to find a way out while Dean goes in search of the room. When they find themselves trapped, Sam gets a call. Believing it’s Dean looking for help, Sam leaves the couple with a shotgun and goes in search for his brother.

Dean wasn’t the one to make the call

We soon learn that Dean didn’t make the call. He’s busy looking through some of Sanford’s journals, learning all about the cruel experiments he conducted on his patients. Sanford believed that provoking extreme anger would be helpful for his patients. After later learning that Sam walked off, Dean takes a trip to the basement to find his brother.

Sure enough, there’s a hidden room in the basement; a room where all the illegal procedures were carried out. Just as he opens the door, Sam appears and shoots his brother with rock salt. Sam has the change to express his rage against Dean. Sam is angry that Dean constantly plays the good soldier and does as Daddy says, but refuses to actually find their father.

Dean decides to trick Sam with an unloaded pistol, giving him the chance to knock his brother out and look for Sandford’s corpse. It turns out it was in the hidden room, which is why it was never found. Just as Dean starts to salt and burn the bones, Sanford attacks and tries to invoke the extreme rage in Dean. However, the elder Winchester is able to throw the lighter onto the bones and destroy the vengeful spirit.

Long-lost Dad calls

The very next morning, the two brothers are sleeping. A phone call wakes Sam. When he answers it, it’s John on the other end.
