Ever heard how rumors are based on reality? Supernatural Season 1, Episode 17 showed rumors can become dangerous real if enough people believe.

Supernatural Season 1, Episode 17 introduced the two men who would eventually become the loveable and annoying Ghostfacers. That’s right; it was the first time Ed Zeddmore and Harry Spengler were introduced to the universe, as owners of Hell Hound’s Lair. The Winchesters soon learned that the internet could become a dangerous place and make a story come to life.

The Winchesters find a case

When a group of teenagers visit a haunted house, they find the body of an unknown girl hanging in the cellar. However, the body goes missing before the police arrive and it looks like a prank gone wrong.

Two months later, the Winchesters pick up on the case and decide to pay a visit to Craig Thursten. He shares the story of Mordechai Murdoch, a 1930s farms who killed his daughters in the cellar by hanging them. When the Winchesters go to the house, they find symbols everywhere of different origins. There’s one in particular that stands out for Dean and he just can’t figure out where.

During their investigation of the house, the Winchesters run into Ed and Harry, self-proclaimed paranormal investigators from the website Hell Hound’s Lair. Ed and Harry are annoyed at the Winchesters for interrupting them, viewing them as inferior beings. The Winchesters decide they’re just two annoying kids and leave them be.

That is until the next day. When the Winchesters learn that a girl has really died in the house from being hung from the rafters, they pay another visit. They run into Ed and Harry again, but also Mordechai’s spirit who chases them from the house. Surprisingly, the spirit isn’t slowed down by rock salt, making the Winchesters dig further into the story. One thing they noticed was that Mordechai’s wrists were slit, which isn’t in the lore at all.

Dean figures out a symbol

While researching about the lore, Sam finds Hell Hound’s Lair, where the lore about Mordechai has changed. The brothers decide to pay Craig another visit, which is when Dean realizes that the symbol he recognized wasn’t from lore or urban legends at all. It was from the cover of one of Blue Oyster Cult’s albums.

Craig admits that he and his cousin made up the story of Mordechai. They’d sprayed a load of symbols on walls, some of them belonging to album covers. Sam gets the feeling that they may be dealing with a tulpa, and confirms this with a Tibetan spirit sigil in the house. If enough people believe the story on the Hell Hound’s Lair website, then the story can become a reality.

The great news is that it just means the story on the website needs to change, including a way to destroy Mordechai. The Winchesters convince Ed and Harry to include the fact that iron rounds will kill Mordechai in their story.

After giving time for the story to take shape, the Winchesters return to the house. However, it turns out the server crashed, so the legend hasn’t had time to change. All Dean can do is set fire to the house. He figures that if the house isn’t there, the legend can’t exist. They bid farewell to Ed and Harry, hoping to never see them again.
