Castiel has had a mixture of funny, heartwarming, and beautiful lines, but which stand out the most?

Castiel is everyone’s favorite loyal and revered angel. While all the other angels proved just to be “dicks” (as Dean Winchester would say), Castiel has always proved to think about the world first. He’s put Chuck’s creations first as much as possible, even if that meant working with the devil (and sometimes literally).

While many of his most memorable lines in Supernatural have been the funniest ones, that doesn’t necessarily make them the best. He’s had beautiful and heartwarming lines that have shown how much his character has developed. It’s hard not to say all his lines have been the best, but in Day 3 of the 25 Days of Cas-man it’s time to narrow down the list.

Here are the best 11 Castiel lines in Supernatural so far.

I’ll just…wait here then

This just had to be the first line. Not only is it one of the most memorable lines, but it’s also one that became a song in the 200th episode, “Fan Fiction.” In season 5, Castiel is still getting used to being around humans. He doesn’t understand all their needs and patterns, but waiting in the dark for four hours seems like nothing. I’d like to know what Castiel does in the hours that the Winchesters sleep. How does he waste the time?

I understand. The bird represents God, Coyote is Man, endlessly chasing the divine and yet never able to catch him.

Who would have thought that a children’s cartoon could be likened to Man looking for God? Well, Castiel managed it in season 8. While watching Loony Toons he made a connection between Roadrunner and the Coyote, representing God and Man. It’s one of the loveable traits of Castiel that we haven’t seen for a while. Maybe if Dean had left Scooby Doo on for Jack we’d have seen another similarity between the two.

I don’t understand… why does it want my name?

The early seasons also introduced us to a Castiel who had no idea how to work technology. The show really could have played on this when Mary Winchester came back from the dead 30+ years later. This line from season 5 sums up the whole of Castiel’s lack of understanding about phones. He didn’t even get why the answer machine needed him to say his name for the voicemail greeting.

He does eventually learn all about voicemails and why he needs a greeting. By season 12, he has the brilliant intro of “This is my voicemail. Make your voice a mail.” It’s not quite as good as the original line, though.

Not you. Or me. Sam of course is an abomination. We’ll have to find someone else.

Also during season 5, the Winchesters and Castiel are looking for a way to kill the “Whore of Babylon.” While most of Castiel’s funny lines in earlier seasons was his lack of understanding of human ways, this was just because he failed to understand how hurtful the phrase “Sam of course is an abomination” was. It was all true, though, for the storyline and Castiel was just pointing that out.

I think we can rule Moses out as a suspect.

During season 6, the staff of Moses had been stolen and was being used to kill people with an ancient plague. Castiel feels the need to point out that Moses isn’t a suspect. It’s cute that he felt the need to make that point, as if the Winchesters were seriously going to consider him.

I don’t understand that reference.

This is one of those quotes for Castiel like “according to the lore” and “son of a bitch” are for Sam and Dean respectively. It’s a line that he’s said on more than one occasion and sums up his feelings or the situation perfectly at the time. For those who love Captain America too, there’s a connection to Steve Rogers’ inability to understand (usually) popular culture references.

The righteous man who begins it is the only one who can finish it.

It was a statement Dean wishes Castiel had never made. At the same time, it was something we’d wished as fans that we’d never heard. Castiel admits that Dean was the first seal and when he broke and started torturing people that he broke that first seal. But more than that, it’s now up to him to finish it all. The line stands out for multiple reasons and is one of Castiel’s best because of that.

If the pizza man truly loves this babysitter, why does he keep slapping her rear? Perhaps she’s done something wrong.

Yet again another instance of Castiel not quite understanding the world of humans. We all know that you don’t watch porn in a room with your friends. Yet, Castiel doesn’t even realize what porn is or why you shouldn’t watch it. He’s more concerned about the actions of the pizza man. This pizza man is something that comes up on other occasions. He learned how to knock Meg off her feet with a kiss because of him.

I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition.

New characters need solid introduction lines. Castiel certainly got that, along with his Earth-shaking, light-shattering entrance. Honestly, Castiel’s entrance has to be one of the best ever in TV history! And this line helps it. When Dean asks who he is, Cas doesn’t give a name but a statement of what he’s done.

You know this world, this sad, doomed little world,it needs you. It needs every last Winchester it can get, and I won’t let you die, I won’t let any of you die.

There aren’t too many poignant and beautiful lines on this list, but there are so many from Castiel. This has to be the best. Season 12 isn’t considered one of the best seasons, but one particular storyline made Castiel realize just how important the Winchesters were—and not just one of the brothers. He realized that every Winchester the world could get was important and he wasn’t going to let anyone take even one of them away, including Mary.

Hey, Assbutt!

How could this line not be included? The last on the list is that single line to Michael, as he through the holy oil in the season 5 finale. Lucifer even brought it up a few years later, admitting that he still doesn’t quite get it. No, nobody really gets it but it’s the perfect example of Castiel trying to fit into Earth and some of the ways the Winchesters had rubbed off on him.
