The Supernatural season 1 creatures weren’t just great for scares, but linked to real mythology.

There are so many awesome creatures from Supernatural. The first season helped to set the expectations for the show in terms of mythology and urban legends. Some of the creatures and monsters linked directly to the legends and others were offshoots or connected to multiple legends.

While SPN Hunters has already looked at the best creatures in terms of scares and creation, it’s time to look at the mythology. This list isn’t just about the creatures that stuck as close to their mythology as possible, but the ones that used the mythology the best.

More from Supernatural

#7. Tulpas

It’s odd to say that a tulpa is a creature that’s excellent, considering a tulpa isn’t quite a creature. It’s a thought-form but led to the creature of a monster that could have killed anything. The best thing about the lore really is that it stuck to the original mythology.

What was managed by sticking to this mythology was the episode “Hell House.” It should just what could happen if enough people believed the same thing. The tulpa also gave a look at how dangerous the internet could be. Just how many other haunted houses out there are because of tulpas?

#6. Vampires

Towards the end of the first season, Supernatural finally gave fans the vampires. This was something Eric Kripke didn’t initially want to include, as Buffy the Vampire Slayer had only just finished. He didn’t want people to just think of the Buffy vampires.

Luckily, he changed his mind. But that was partially thanks to finding the older lore. Vampires weren’t always creatures that burned in the sun and feared crosses. They were deep mystical creatures, with vampiric lore in almost every culture. What Kripke and his team managed to do was create monsters that brought something old back out of the woodwork and create a unique villain, without resorting to sparkles!

Vampires are badass creatures. They’re strong, smart and loyal to each other. You definitely don’t want to face them!

#5. The Woman in White

This is technically a vengeful spirit, but the Woman in White is a lore all by itself; and a lore that Supernatural stuck very close to. Well, the show stuck to the multiple lores joined together.

It was a powerful villain for the first episode. Not only was this a chance to meet the brothers, but understand more about the world the show was setting up. There was a chance to understand more about the urban legends and realize that fans weren’t just going to see carbon copies of famous legends.

The Woman in White had a backstory and heartbreak. There were realistic elements thrown in to this monster storyline that made many people realize that things weren’t quite going to be black and white.

#4. The first demon

While the show has now focused on demons a lot, in season 1 they were used just a handful of times. “Phantom Traveller” introduced the very first demon of the series, and set up something Bobby would later inform the Winchesters. There would usually only be about four demon possessions a year, so it was understandable why the Winchesters had never faced one.

But more importantly, this was a demon that wasn’t overly easy to kill. The lore stuck heavily to the Christian religion, with various Biblical references throughout, so it wasn’t that surprising that the demon exorcism was Christian-based, too. This set the standard for demons, making it clear that sometimes monsters just attack because they want to.

#3. The shapeshifter

There are so many shapeshifter legends and Supernatural worked with them. They told a story, bring in various cultures together in one monster. In the end, fans got a creature that they couldn’t trust, but one that was interesting and had heart. The creature has been used over and over again and each time it’s difficult not to feel some sort of empathy.

It’s never easy going into a creature with multiple legends. The writers and showrunners managed to find some of the creepiest options without going over the top.

#2. Reapers

Reapers were introduced in “Faith,” one of the best episodes of Supernatural ever. The creature expanded the mythology on death, creating something to not quite fear but just accept as part of life. This wasn’t something that wanted to kill. It was a neutral being and helped to bring up thoughts of fate and faith.

Most people pictured a hooded figure with a scythe, but the show opted for the unique look of a dishevelled man in a suit. This helped to get rid of the creep factor without completely ruining the lore; combining everything necessary to make an excellent monster and episode.

#1. Sanford Ellicott & Melanie Merchant

There were multiple violent spirits in Supernatural, but Sanford Ellicott & Melanie Merchant were the best depictions of them. Both of these spirits were just evil. It wasn’t possible to feel anything but hatred and fear for them, making them some of the creepiest villains ever to appear on the show.

While vengeful spirits were managed relatively easily, the violent spirits would make sure they couldn’t be killed. They tried everything possible to stop their corpses being burned or to continue killing their victims. This pulled directly from the lore of violent spirits and gave fans something to fear.
