When Supernatural Season 2 started, John Winchester made a sacrifice to protect his boys.

John Winchester was a hated character by some of the fandom in the first season of Supernatural. This was a man who just dropped off the face of the Earth, leading to the two Winchester brothers going in search for him. After all, the last they heard, he was on a hunting trip and that meant far more danger than your standard stag hunt.

Even if he just wanted space, he could have at least told Dean he was safe. He ended up going weeks without any communication, until it came to changing his voicemail to make sure people could get in touch with Dean when needed.

At the end of Supernatural Season 1, he made an attempt to apologize. He and Sammy made up, the Winchester brothers joined him on a hunt, and they were in touching distance of the bad guy that had plagued them from the beginning. However, it wasn’t really until Season 2 that he redeemed himself.

When Dean was at death’s door, John took a serious gamble. He offered his own soul up for his son’s. He couldn’t see Dean die, especially when he partially blamed himself for the situation they’d found themselves in. Maybe telling his sons the truth from the beginning could have helped prevent the events at the very end!

But did he fully redeem himself? Sure, he gave up his soul, but that wasn’t for an unselfish reason. He wanted his sons to live without him, rather than him living without one of his sons. Dean was put back in charge of caring for Sammy, who John knew could be a danger to the world. John didn’t even tell Dean everything; just that Dean may have to kill Sammy at some point. That was hurtful and selfish, once again showing that he wasn’t Father of the Year.

Sure, he may have saved Dean’s life, but it wasn’t with purely good intentions. He didn’t 100% redeem himself in the Supernatural Season 2 premiere.
