Supernatural Season 2 set up a storyline that would cause confusion and pain in later episodes.

When Supernatural Season 2 began, fans didn’t know what to expect. The Winchesters were last seen left for dead, after a demon-possessed truck driver ran into the Impala. How were they all going to make it out alive?

In the end, John Winchester made a drastic deal, which would set up repercussions for the rest of the season. Here’s a look at the best lines from the night.

Listen to me, Bobby. If there’s only one working part, that’s enough.

Sam knew his brother well enough to know that Baby was worth saving. Bobby wants to scrap the car and just take out everything from the trunk. To Bobby, Baby really is just a ’67 Impala. For Dean and Sam, it’s home. Sam knows how much it means to Dean and what it would mean to just give up. Giving up on the Impala would be like giving up on Dean.

You begged me to be part of this hunt. Now if you’d killed that damn thing when you had the chance, none of this would have happened.

John wasn’t anything if not predictable. His focus was on getting the demon and by choosing John’s life over killing the demon, Sam had let John down. It was yet another moment of John’s crusade and lack of focus on his boys; making them do the unthinkable. Of course, part of that was possibly due to the things John knew about Sam and the Yellow-Eyed Demon, but it was still harsh.

Dude, I full on Swayze-d that mother.

Who didn’t love this line? As John and Sam argued, Dean got angry enough to control something in the human plane. It was just a hint of the things to come, but an awesome pop culture reference to Ghost.

You know, you read the most interesting things. For example, did you know that reapers can alter human perception? I sure didn’t.

The only person Dean could talk to in the hospital was Tessa. Many fans wanted her to be a spirit just like Dean; someone that Dean could save in the afterlife. In the end, she was a reaper; one who wanted Dean to move on. It was interesting to see how the reaper mythology adapted during this episode, making it believable and beautiful at the same time.

You conjuring me, John. I’m surprised.

The Yellow-Eyed Demon was shocked to have John summon him, and so were many fans. Honestly, this line stands out because it was something many fans were thinking and saying at the same time. If John knew a way of summoning the demon, why didn’t he do this from the start? Why did he have to disappear for months without telling his sons? Something felt a little off at this point.

You’re not the first soldier I’ve plucked from the field. They all feel the same. They can’t leave. Victory hangs in the balance. But they’re wrong. The battle goes on without them.

Dean was sure he was still needed on Earth. He went through all the emotions many Supernatural fans would have if they learned they were dead. Tessa had a beautiful way to help him understand. After a full season of Dean being viewed as a soldier, Tessa continued that and connected with him on that level.

How do you think angry spirits are born? They can’t let go and they can’t move on. And you’re about to become one. The same thing you hunt.

As Dean continued to fight back, Tessa made a point that sent shivers down the spine. He would become the thing he had always hunted. Maybe he would just remain a ghost, but he would be a ghost all the same. Finally, Dean learned how vengeful and violent spirits really formed. They’d refused to move on.

You’d come up to me and you, you’d put your hand on my shoulder and you’d look me in the eye and you’d… You’d say ‘It’s okay, Dad.’ Dean, I’m sorry.

This was John’s attempt at making up for the things he’d done in the past. Sure, it’s a beautiful moment, but not without its downsides. Why did it take John dying for him to say “I’m sorry?” Yet, it’s an important line and a beautiful one when you just take it for what it is.
