There’s a very good chance that Wayward Sisters is the next big hit for CW, and the world needs that to be the case.

Entertainment is a way for us to escape the hellish reality of the real world. But as we saw at the end of last year, even the world of make-believe can be way too real sometimes.

It’s no coincidence that this past weekend’s Golden Globes saw women rally together to push back against the harsh struggles they’ve faced in Hollywood. Whether it’s the sexual harassment scandals or the wage gap, there has been a lot to push back against.

More from Supernatural

What better time for an all-female spinoff of one of the most popular shows on television. The Wayward Sisters spinoff is the type of female-centric entertainment we need right now because it’s an organic safe space that other pockets of the entertainment world can look at and use as a blueprint.

It’s not that Wayward Sisters exists solely because of the climate. The series is naturally spinning off a show and is deserving on its own merits. We will see how things go on Thursday’s backdoor pilot episode, but the idea of an all-female cast of characters kicking ass on a weekly basis is something that should get everyone excited.

Giving female characters a central role on network television is still a struggle that is all too real. There are examples of this that can be pointed too — notably the NBC series Blindspot — but when you can count the examples on one hand you need more.

Wayward Sisters is a way to add to that count but would do so in the way we want to see it happen. Rather than force a show for the sake of network executives feeling better about themselves, Sisters is an organic extension of a show. Strong female characters are too few and far between these days, and if Wayward Sisters can follow in the footsteps if Supernatural and succeed, it will be a huge win not just for fans but be a potential roadmap for further change on television.
