The first season introduced Dean’s very normal fear and Supernatural Season 2 focused on Sam’s.

Who would have thought that two hunters who have seen plenty of monsters and creatures would be afraid of very normal things? Dean’s fear of flying shocked many, but it made a lot of sense. He didn’t like the loss of control over a situation. In Supernatural Season 2, Episode 2, the focus turned to Sam’s fear.

It turned out Sam wasn’t a fan of clowns. Again, it’s an understandable fear. Coulrophobia is something that many SPN fans also suffer from, so fans had the ability to connect with this main character; empathize with him when a situation with a clown came up.

But what exactly was the clown in the episode? Here’s your recap of “Everybody Loves a Clown” for a reminder.

Saying goodbye the hunter way

The episode opened with Sam and Dean giving their father a hunter’s funeral. John’s body burned on a funeral pyre, with Dean deciding against saying any last words. It’s clear instantly that Dean is bottling a lot of emotion and isn’t going to even open up to Sam.

The two are staying with Bobby, while Dean repairs the Impala. While going through John’s things, Sam comes across an old voicemail message left on one of the cellphones. It’s from a woman called Ellen and the Winchesters decide to track her down to the Harvelle’s Roadhhouse.

After an excellent introduction to Ellen and Jo Harvelle, Ellen shares her condolences for John’s death and explains her husband, Bill, was a hunter. Ellen also shares that Ash, who was sleeping on the pool table the whole time, would be able to help the brothers with their search for the Yellow-Eyed Demon.

Ash needs 51 hours (exactly) to analyze all John’s research. The Winchesters are left twiddling their thumbs.

The mysterious clown murderer

As they wait, the Winchesters realize that there are some strange deaths happening in the local area. Everyone says that a clown was seen near the houses, so the brothers head to a local circus. Throughout the situation, they clash over the grief they both feel, as Dean continues to bottle his emotions up.

The brothers get jobs at the circus, although Sam is not comfortable working around clowns at all, where they find out a young girl has seen a clown. Her parents can’t see it, so the brothers decide to follow the family home and stalk the house. Sure enough, the clown appears and the Winchesters say the family from certain death.

Ellen realizes that the brothers are dealing with a rakshasa, and the only way to kill it is through a brass dagger. They also need to figure out who the rakshasa at the circus is.

They initially suspect the owner, Mr. Cooper. However, it turns out to be the blind knife thrower, who traps the brothers in the fun house and attempts to kill them. Sam uses the brass pipe from the organ in the fun house to kill the rakshasa.

Dean releases his emotions

Finally, Ash has created a computer program to alert him of any sign the Yellow-Eyed Demon has arrived. After all, he is a former MIT student and genius, so it really wasn’t that hard.

Ellen offers the brothers a place to stay, but they decide to head back to Bobby’s. Dean is able to finish fixing up the car and Sam questions Dean about dealing with John’s death. Once alone, Dean certainly releases his emotions, smashing the Impala numerous times in one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the whole series.
