Sam and Rowena are both petrified after seeing Lucifer’s true face, but should Supernatural show that onscreen?

During “Various Villains and Sundry,” Sam and Rowena bonded over the fact that they’ve both seen Lucifer’s true face. Lucifer, the TV show about the archangel becoming a private detective in LA, has regularly shown the true devil face, albeit only in flashes. However, should Supernatural do the same? Would it be better to keep the face off screen, leaving the true horrors to the viewers’ imagination?

Keep it off screen for more horror

More from Supernatural

No matter what Supernatural shows, the real face will never have the true horror that Sam and Rowena have hinted at. This is a face that haunts Sam’s nightmares (presumably) seven years on. Rowena, the most powerful witch in the world, has been left terrified and searching for anything that will offer her extra protection.

If the face is truly this horrifying, it really is best left to the imagination. As awesome as the effects have been lately, there is no way that something so terrifying could be shown onscreen. The imagination will bring it to life.

Charmed attempted to bring the horror of The Source of All Evil’s face onscreen. From that point, this hooded figure that was supposedly terrifying to see became a lesser being. There was little reason for the fans to fear him; to believe he was the stuff of nightmares. Please don’t have this happen to Luci!

Keep him as a higher being

The only way for Lucifer’s face to show up onscreen would be for someone else to see it. Sam and Rowena seeing the face is understandable. Sam became the vessel for Lucifer and Rowena had angered Lucifer so much that he wanted to leave her terrified before death. But everyone else has no reason to see it. He would suddenly become a slightly lesser being if everyone got to see his face.

Sometimes leaving things to the imagination is powerful. It makes a villain look strong and seem scarier. Everyone can think of the things that scare them the most. Plus it will mean more money can be spent on other graphics and elements, since it would take a lot to create this monster that Sam and Rowena hint at seeing.
