No Exit saw Jo sneak her way onto a hunt, but it wasn’t good news for the Winchesters in Supernatural.

More from Supernatural

When Jo secretly joins the Winchesters on a hunt, she finds out that the hunter life isn’t as glamorous as she once thought. But will that deter her from taking on the life of a hunter? During the case, the Winchesters come across the spirit of person known as America’s first serial killer, adding a little reality to the series.

At the end of the episode, the Winchesters find out exactly why Ellen and John fell out. It’s understanding why Ellen doesn’t quite trust Sam and Dean with her daughter, although it’s time for Jo to make up her own choices.

Sam and Dean head to the Roadhouse

The call-in at the Roadhouse was supposed to be a little break for the Winchesters, but they soon learn of a case. When they get there, Elle and Jo are arguing over Jo’s insistence to hunt on her own. Of course Ellen doesn’t want that life for her daughter. That life is dangerous and she doesn’t’ want to lose her daughter.

So, the Winchesters decide to pick up the case. Blonde girls are going missing in a very specific apartment building, with ectoplasm in the apartment of the most recent victim. That doesn’t just mean spirit, but an extremely strong spirit.

When the Winchesters get to the apartment, they find Jo is turning up too. She pretends to be Dean’s girlfriend and hands over money in cash to rent the apartment the last victim was taken from. Jo has also set up a false trail through Ash to make sure Ellen can’t find them.

Rather than waste time arguing, Jo joins the brothers on the case. They come across a clump of hair from a victim. Meanwhile another woman in the apartment is taken by the spirit.

Jo’s backstory comes out in more detail

While fans knew that Jo’s father was a hunter and was killed on a case, Jo and Ellen have been quiet about their history. During the episode, Jo admits that her memories of her father are when he returned from hunts. Now she wants to hunt to feel connected with him and she has one of his knives with her at all times.

It doesn’t take too long for the Winchesters to find a real-life connection. The apartment was built over the place America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, was executed. His spirit is here and he’s now continuing his work.

This is extremely bad news. H.H. Holmes was known for having hidden rooms and compartments. Walls were fake, creating spaces in between, so he could peek and abduct his victims. Jo is able to squeeze into one part of the wall, but during that time she’s taken. It’s after this that Ellen calls to share that she broke Ash and learns Jo has been taken. Ellen takes the first flight out.

Time to find the victims

Sam works out where the victims may have been taken. There’s an old sewer system that runs beneath the building, which would be perfect for hiding the victims.

Sure enough, that’s where they are. Jo wakes to find herself trapped in one of the sewer ducts and the most recent victim, Teresa, is also there. With her dad’s iron knife, Jo is able to hold the violent spirit at bay, until the Winchesters are able to find her.

The problem is they can’t get rid of the spirit. He was cased in concrete after his death, so they need to find a way to trap him instead. Using Jo as bait, they manage to lure H.H. Holmes out and then set off their booby trap to create a ring of salt around all the exits. To make sure the water won’t wash the salt away, Dean “borrows” a cement truck to fill the drains and seal H.H. Holmes’ eternal prison.

By this point, Ellen has made it to the Winchesters and Jo and joins them for the extremely quiet drive back. This is the point more details come out. Ellen tells Jo, who tells the Winchesters, that John had used Jo’s father as bait on a case and it got Jo’s dad killed. Ellen never really forgave John for that and can’t trust the Winchester brothers because of it. Jo leaves the Winchesters hurt and upset about all the secrets and lies.
