When the Winchesters learn of a demonic virus in Supernatural Season 2, Episode 9, they have to find a way to stop it without being infected themselves. That’s not always that easy!

The Winchesters are pulled into a demonic virus outbreak. “Croatoan” introduces the virus for the first time, showing us exactly how much damage this virus could do if allowed to spread. It also shows fans how humans can deal with stress, with some remaining calm and others taking drastic and dangerous actions.

This was an episode full of overarching storyline. It was one that would connect to the premiere and push us forward to the finale. Here are the best lines from Supernatural Season 2, Episode 9.

Well, all your weirdo visions are always tied to the Yellow-Eyed Demon somehow… so was there any black smoke? Did we try to exorcise it?

Dean has quickly worked out how all these visions are connected and this is an important point. What we wouldn’t realize until the end of the episode is that this was actually a trap. The Yellow-Eyed Demon wanted Sam to get the vision to lure the two into the town. This would help to test the demonic virus on Sam to see just how he would react. It’s possibly a link that you only spot the second time watching it, as this line suddenly stands out.

And I mean, there were theories — Indian raid, disease, but nobody knows what really happened. They were all just gone. I mean, wiped out overnight.

The brothers discuss the word Croatoan, which brings up the Roanoke Colony. Sam points out that disease was one of the things considered a reason for the colony to disappear. However, he does state something that isn’t quite true. The colony wasn’t necessarily wiped out overnight. As he says, nobody knew what happened. There’s a three-year gap between John White leaving and him returning. Three years is certainly not overnight!

It’s like a Biblical plague.

This line means so much more now that you look back with the previous seasons. Eventually, Pestilence would attempt to use the Croatoan virus to create a Biblical plague and help the apocalypse. Of course, that’s not what happened, but it was a good way to foreshadow the possibility.

Dad always had a theory about Croatoan. He thought it was a demon’s name. Sometimes known as Deva or sometimes Resheph. A demon of plague and pestilence.

This is certainly an interesting theory and something that helps to explain a little more about the virus. It’s a hint at a possible way the demonic virus actually started. Croatoan caused it and he wanted to leave his mark behind so everyone knew. This would also link to the discussion of Roanoke Colony. Croatoan was actually the demon letting people know what had happened.

I’m tired, Sam. I’m tired of this job, this life… this weight on my shoulders, man. I’m tired of it.

As the Winchesters are left alone, with everyone worried Sam would turn into one of the “Croats,” Dean has a chance to open up. After months of struggling with his dad’s death and now the knowledge that John sold his soul, Dean is ready to finally lay his thoughts on the table. He’s showing his cards. Most importantly, he does this while looking at Sam. It’s not often Dean can open himself up and look at the person he’s talking to.

Right before Dad died, he told me something. He told me something about you.

While this is an important plot storyline and develops Sam’s visions, it’s an important one for Dean. The moment in the medical center isn’t the only big one for Dean. He also opens up at the very end—and into the next episode. It’s finally time to share the secret John whispered in the Supernatural Season 2 premiere.
