Legion of Collectors March 2018 review: Green Lantern box brings an end of an era

facebooktwitterreddit

After two years, the Legion of Collectors service comes to a close with a box dedicated to the Green Lantern franchise and its beloved characters.

Two years have making its debut with the Batman vs. Superman box in March 2016, the Legion of Collectors subscription service served up its final subscription box this March with a box dedicated to the Green Lantern franchise. With the service coming to an end – albeit a temporary one given Funko’s promise to keep the franchise going in partnership with yet to be announced retailers – the bar for the Legion of Collectors’ farewell box was set high, but did Funko live up to expectations?

Warning: The following post contains spoilers regarding the items within the March 2018 Legion of Collectors box. If you have not yet received your box and want to avoid spoilers this is where you should leave us.

Our journey into this month’s box begins with our t-shirt which features three iconic Green Lantern Corps. members. Unfortunately, I’ve never been a big fan of the franchise and know next to nothing about the characters from the franchise.

For this reason, I’ll be focusing on the products’ designs rather than delving into their relation to the comics.

With our shirt, I have to admit I would have loved to see the Legion of Collectors service come to an end with help from a Pop! tee. Instead we get a shirt which fails to deliver that wow factor and looks like a shirt you could find at any major retailer.

Moving along to the next item from the month’s box is lantern-shaped stress ball which is a fun way to feature the iconic lantern which fuels the Green Lantern’s ring. As seen in the image above, the lantern stress ball is a bit rough around the edges which is a bit of a deterrent but the item is a fun addition to the box.

If I had to pick out a standout item from this month’s box, the honor would clearly go to the Pint Size Hero 2-pack. It’s nice to see Hal Jordan and Sinestro get the Pint Size Hero treatment and the figures look great alongside my other Pint Size Heroes – including those acquired from past subscription boxes.

Rounding out the month’s offering is a Funko subscription service first: a Pop! 3-pack! As seen in the image above, the set includes Pop! versions of three Green Lantern characters. Looking at the figures’ designs, they each feature unique designs which are true to the characters’ comic book counterparts.

Each new DC Legion of Collectors box promises to provide subscribers with a box filled with $50 worth of exclusive, high-quality DC and Funko collectible products. With this in mind, let’s take a quick look at the estimated retail value of each of this month’s items:

  • Green Lantern T-Shirt: $15-$25
  • Green Lantern Latern-Shaped Stress Ball: $5-$7
  • Hal Jordan & Sinestro Pint Size Heroes 2-Pack: $10-$12
  • Ch’p, Guy Gardner & Kilowog Pop! 3-Pack: $45-$60

When Funko first announced that the March box would be set to the theme of Green Lantern, I was far from thrilled as the hero has never been a personal favorite. Then came the announcement that the subscription service side of the franchise would be coming to a close making the March box the final box in the subscription service side. Immediately my expectations were raised as I hoped Funko would end on top with an unforgettable box.

Unfortunately, I might have set my expectations a bit too high which led me to be extremely disappointed with the March box. There wasn’t a single item in the box that managed to wow me or that I would have been racing to stores to pick up had they been released on their own.

I’m sure the box was one which wowed Green Lantern diehard fans, but from the standpoint of someone who knows next to nothing about the franchise and its characters I would likely have passed on this box altogether. It’s just disappointing that the service came to a close with such a polarizing box.
