In the last few episodes of The Walking Dead, Simon (Steven Ogg) has shown that he doesn’t share Negan’s view for the post-apocalypse. Now thanks to a new clip from next week’s episode, it appears as if Simon will wage a coup of his own.

In case you haven’t been keeping track of Simon, he’s been much more aggressive this half of Season 8. He’s shown us how far he’s willing to go but now his true colors are finally beginning to come out; killing the Junkyarders being a perfect example. Simon didn’t have to kill them. In fact, he was ordered not to by his commander in chief. Disobeying that order is a clear betrayal of Negan’s trust and proves that he has his own agenda planned. What that could be is anyone’s guess but the latest clip seems to be hinting at him letting Negan get killed. Check it out below:

As you can see, Simon blatantly ignores the random truck driving towards the convoy he’s in. Simon can see the truck heading directly toward them but doesn’t say a thing to Dwight or anyone else. One could argue that Simon didn’t have enough time to react after seeing the truck, but he did. After seeing it, he readjusted his seat, getting comfortable, not minding a thing. The next thing the clips shows us is Negan getting T-boned by that same truck, and guess who’s driving; Rick.

The clip teases a small chase between Rick and Negan, then it flips back to Simon who’s hesitant to act. He tells his henchmen to stay off their radios and orders them to approach cautiously because there’s no telling how many more people are out there. And while Simon is right to be careful, his hesitancy to help his boss gives us the impression that he wants Negan out of the picture.

Does Simon want control of the Saviors?

The reason we need to consider the possibility of Simon taking command of the Saviors is because of the clip’s final seconds. In them, Simon smirks and appears quite pleased by what transpired. He doesn’t say anything but the look on his face says it all. He’s obviously not concerned with Negan’s wellbeing, and he’s not in much of a hurry to rescue him. Therefore, it’s probably safe to say Simon will let Negan be captured. Or, perhaps Simon will fake a rescue attempt, only to let a horde of undead feast on Negan.

In either case, Simon has potentially sown together a subplot that could see him become The Walking Dead’s next central antagonist. He’s just as malevolent as Negan and slightly more ruthless, so he makes for an ideal replacement. Although, whispers of Alpha and her followers entering the fold has become a popular theory among fans.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC. Season 8, Episode 12 “The Key” airs March 18, 2018
