It’s been over a year since The Last Kingdom graced our screens. The season 2 finale aired on May 4 and ever since the finale any official word on season 3 has remained a closely guarded secret. Fans even began to wonder if the show had been quietly cancelled. But the official statement by both BBC and Netflix is that there is no official statement. The Last Kingdom season 3 has been not been confirmed or denied, we are in limbo.
That official stance of limbo still remains. The BBC and Netflix are still remaining all quiet on what is happening but Author Bernard Cornwell has given everyone some fresh new hope. Responding to a fan’s question on his website, Cornwell confirmed that the series will be returning for a third season.
It’s been long speculated that the show would return for the third season. When news of a casting call broke we thought the confirmation by BBC or Netflix would soon follow. Cornwell, however, is the first person involved in the making of the series to confirm the third season.
Yet despite the creator’s announcement neither the BBC nor Netflix have come forward to back up these claims. The news only surfaced several days ago however so maybe the two networks need a bit more time to sort out an announcement.
Cornwell also gave away a possible release date
While fans everywhere, including myself, will be delighted at the announcement, Cornwell went even further by giving us an idea at the release date.
"“Yes, the show will return – on Netflix – probably this autumn. They are filming now and have very kindly asked me to make a cameo appearance. I’m just hoping that Uhtred will insult me,” he wrote."
This would tie in with the casting call that was discovered last year. The actor had to be available between October 23, 2017, and mid-May 2018 making an autumn release date likely.
Its all good news for us The Last Kingdom fans. All we need to wait for now is the BBC and Netflix to confirm everything on their end.
