The Magicians found the sixth key, as they entered an alternate world. It certainly raised a number of major questions for the next two episodes and beyond.

The Magicians Season 3, Episode 11 isn’t a stranger to creating major problems for its heroes. Nor is it a stranger to creating storylines for a potential next season. Fortunately, The Magicians Season 4 is confirmed, so the potential complications this season can be rectified in the next one.

As we’re getting closer to the end of the season, the heroes are getting closer to completing their quest for their seven keys. They got the sixth (well, technically the seventh, as the sixth is powering the fairy world) but it wasn’t without it’s complications. Here are the burning questions after “Twenty-Three.”

More from Syfy

#1. Was Twenty-Three Quentin a hint at what’s to come for our Alice?

Quentin died and Alice did everything to bring him back. However, things went completely haywire and he ended up killing the Beast and becoming it himself. Not what you were likely expecting in the episode, but The Magicians does well at creating the unimaginable.

Alice’s spells to bring Quentin back went completely wrong, and we ended up with a Quentin without a shade. However, he was also obsessed with Fillory and that partially led to him becoming the most powerful creature in the world.

While our Alice currently has her shade (thanks to Julia), she has her obsessions. Is it possible that Twenty-Three Quentin gave us an insight into what could happen to our Alice in the future? Will she become the next Beast?

#2. Have all timeloops lost their magic?

One of the first things Julia and Josh learned was that Twenty-Three had lost its magic too. It turned out it was linked to the killing of Gods, just like in the current timeloop. Does that mean all the worlds have lost their magic?

There was a mention in the last episode that losing magic is a normal part of the process. It’s nature’s way to create some sort of balance. The magic always comes back at some point, although sometimes not for centuries. It would make sense if all timeloops eventually lost their magic, right?

#3. Will we see any other timeloops?

So far, we’ve only seen the current loop and Twenty-Three. What about the rest of the timeloops? There are so many more personalities and situations to explore.

This would be an excellent way to bring back some of the lost characters. It would also be a great way to see what could have been. What would happen if Eliot and Margo were the only two to survive (they’d never have the awesome character development they did with the Fillory storyline)? What would have happened if Julia was the only one to survive? What about if everyone died?

This could have been the way to get the key currently powering the fairy world without Julia’s friendship with the fairies being completely destroyed.

#4. Will the High Kings and Queens of Fillory get their lives back?

The High Kings and Queens of Fillory are currently stuck between a rock and a hard place. They can’t get back to their own world, as they’re wanted men and women in this magic-less realm. Tick isn’t going to just roll over and call his guards off the search, especially not now that all four are in Fillory.

Can they ever get their lives back? Magic would need to return for them to do anything against the people of Fillory, but that doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily be able to get their lives back. The locals don’t want them there. Does that mean they’ll get to return home at some point?

#5. Where was Kady?

Everyone was part of this other world, except Kady. There wasn’t even a mention of her and Julia and Josh didn’t even ask about her. After seeing Quentin as the Beast, there was hope that Kady would at least be mentioned.

Of course, Kady’s life in this timeloop didn’t play out as it did in the current one. Penny had fallen in love with Julia, which suggests either Kady was never there (maybe it was one where Jane tried a world without Kady at Brakebills instead of Julia) or she just didn’t bond with the others. Just a mention would have been good. There’s always chance

for that to come soon.

#6. What are the consequences?

At the very end, Twenty-Three’s Penny and Marina decided to step through the door to the current timeloop. This has to have some major consequences, right? Maybe not on the scale of killing a God, but there are still going to be major issues.

The biggest problem is with Penny stepping in. There’s already a Penny there. Can two versions of the same person live for a long period of time in the same world. We saw two Joshes live together for a while, but Twenty-Three’s Josh was swiftly killed by the Quentin-Beast. This suggests that they can’t be together.

Things for Marina might be a little easier. After all, the version of her is dead. However, there is the issue of her being a Hedge Witch. The Magicians and Hedge Witches haven’t joined together since there’s been no need to in this world. Will Marina start causing problems for the magicians when she learns about her own people?

#7. Is this how Penny will come back?

Twenty-Three’s Penny opens up the idea of a body for the current Penny to step into. Is it possible for the current Penny to take over Twenty-Three’s Penny? Will each other even want that to happen? How is Penny going to feel when he sees another version of himself?

There are also problems with Twenty-Three Penny and the Library. After all, Penny signed a contract. Did this include this other version of Penny? There are so many questions about having the two Pennys around, especially with Julia and Kady!
