Shadowhunters season 3, episode 2 preview: Everything you need to know

This week’s episode of Shadowhunters has a bit of a lighter tone compared to the season premiere, and we’re welcoming the extra doses of teamwork, comedy and heart in the fight against Lilith. We had already learned that warlocks would find their magic to be corrupted in season 3 episode 2, and it will be up to Magnus and Alec’s combined abilities (the supernatural and the not-so-supernatural) to try and combat the evil spreading throughout the city.
Putting Shadowhunting to the side for the day, Jace is focused on finding new ways to connect emotionally with Clary, and his sincere efforts wind up putting the pair in a situation that’s very entertaining for the audience. To plan a great night out for the two of them, Jace seeks out help from people who know Clary best, but there are definitely moments when he regrets this strategy.
In a similar way, Simon and Maia spend quality time working on their relationship, despite push back from other werewolves in Maia’s pack. We’ve already seen a teaser clip where Maia defends her boyfriend (and Simon is proud to overhear), but her words might not be enough to change the minds of the other wolves. The audience stills know more than Simon and Maia about the mark branded onto the Daylighter’s forehead, but there’s a fun reveal here that sparks more questions than answers.
With Izzy now the weapons master at the Institute, we see a new kind of researching and crime-fighting collaboration between Isabelle and Luke. Set on studying the possessions and murders taking place around the city, the two of them hope to make progress on the case. Fans will also be excited to see a personal project Izzy is working on in the weapons room.
All the ensemble characters see growth in season 3 episode 2, but it’s Malec that truly drives the story. In a teaser released last week by Freeform, we see that Magnus is responsible for welcoming Lorenzo Rey, the new High Warlock, to Brooklyn. With Alec by Magnus’ side, it doesn’t take long for the Shadowhunter leader to realize why Magnus was so annoyed with having to be cordial and make an appearance. We’ve seen Magnus’ comedic remarks and snarky one-liners on the series many times before, but for Alec, interacting with Lorenzo brings out a whole new kind of sass, salt and shade. There’s a scene later in the episode where Alec is forced to use his charm and social etiquette to help Magnus with a risky task, and the humor woven into the scene is executed very well. Alec definitely didn’t learn these skills during his fight training…
There are also incredibly sweet and emotional moments shared by the two, and we even learn a little more about Magnus’ “morning routine.” If you’ve been following along on social media throughout the filming of Season 3A, you probably know what I’m talking about. There are also moments of emotional vulnerability here though, especially for Magnus. With that being said, it’s these reveals between the couple that show us how Malec is as strong as they’ve ever been, whether it’s learning about complex issues from the past, or using their combined supernatural strength to protect the ones they love.
