5. Matilda

Released in 1996 and based on the Roald Dahl classic, Matilda was a glorious film. It featured a stellar cast, was a solid adaptation and was enjoyed by a lot of kids in the 90’s. A lot of young viewers might not remember, but the film was incredibly feminist, too.

Matilda was a great character as she was smart, independent and kind. Though her family life was rough, she made the most of her situation. The film also incorporated lessons about friendship, family and how what makes us different is what makes us special. It still holds a place in a lot of people’s hearts.

That’s why I think it would be perfect for a TV revival. Similar to A League of their Own, the show would be a modern retelling of the original story. This time, the roles would be reversed with Matilda becoming a teacher or librarian who befriends a young student, similar to herself.

The show could chronicle their growing friendship and eventual, relationship. The ending would stay the same as the movie, but this time the tables are turned for Matilda. Obviously, it would be a dream to have Mara Wilson come back and play Matilda.

Even if Wilson didn’t, this movie should be revived for a younger generation. The movie is awesome, but I’d love to see it retold in a fresh and modern way.
