Gabriel is safe in the bunker and it’s time to help him recover from the ordeal as Asmodeus’ prisoner. Supernatural’s Sam Winchester is the perfect man for this job.

When Dean went through the rift on Supernatural, Sam Winchester was left behind with the beaten and tortured archangel, Gabriel. While Sam may not have been initially happy with the plan, he couldn’t argue against his brother. Now a sneak peek shows us that Sam will try to help Gabriel through the shock, confusion, and trauma of being Asmodeus’ prisoner.

Sam is the perfect man for this job. Of all the people on the series, Sam is the one who has been through the torture of the cage and survived. Sure, Dean has too, but Dean isn’t the most sympathetic person and prefers the action. Sam is the one who can connect the best with others, empathizing rather than sympathizing.

He’s already been there for Rowena

More from Supernatural

When Rowena returned in Supernatural Season 13, Episode 12, we learned that she was terrified of Lucifer. She’s seen his true face and it haunted her dreams. Sam was the one she opened up to and he completely understood. He gave her that safe space to talk, sharing his experience of seeing Lucifer’s true face. It’s something that haunts him almost a decade later.

If he can be there for Rowena–a character who he dislikes and distrusts with a passion–he can also be there for Gabriel. Sure, Gabriel has angered and annoyed them, but he’s never been completely malicious. Everything Gabriel has done has been to teach the Winchesters a lesson. In the end, Gabriel stood up to the task to help take Lucifer down.

Sam has helped others before on Supernatural

Rowena isn’t the only person Sam has listened to and empathized with. Sam has always been there for others. This season alone he helped Jack learn to control his powers. Throughout the earlier episodes, as Dean viewed Jack as evil, Sam opted for the nurture rule. He believed that he could help Jack become good–and it’s worked!

Sam has been through so much that he’s able to connect with other traumatized and scared individuals personally. He’s able to offer advice and understands what is going on in their minds. He’ll understand the fear and confusion in Gabriel’s head. The sneak peek confirms that, as he encourages Gabriel to open up.
