CBS has renewed NCIS for Season 16. Could this be the time to call an end to Gibbs’ team?

As many people expected, NCIS Season 16 is officially confirmed. CBS made the announcement on April 13–it looks like Friday the 13th is a lucky day for Gibbs and co.

It’s honestly not surprising news, considering NCIS Season 15 has averaged 17 million people. It’s CBS’ top-rated drama and has led to two spin-offs that are also excellent. The series may focus on murder and crime, but it also touches on family, personal lives, and friendship. It’s a series that speaks out to multiple ages and individuals.

More from CBS

In a press release, Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment stated:

"This show speaks to viewers of all ages, in all parts of the country and around the world. NCIS’ amazing characters and terrific storytelling result in some of TV’s most passionate fans. Of course, none of this would be possible without an outstanding production team, and talented cast led by the incomparable and absolutely tireless Mark Harmon. We’re thrilled he is returning as the centerpiece of the show, and we could not be more excited for NCIS’ 16th season.#"

NCIS Season 16 should possibly be the last

While it may not be surprising news that Season 16 is confirmed, this should possibly be the last season of the series. The only reason I could see it continue is so it rounds out with an even Season 20, but that’s five years away for a Season 20 finale.

Yes, I love seeing Gibbs and co. in action, but Season 16 isn’t going to be the same. In fact, the last two seasons have felt off. NCIS Season 16 will see only two of its original cast left: Mark Harmon and David McCallum, as Pauley Perrette has decided to leave the series. McCallum hasn’t even been in all the episodes and while Brian Dietzen has handled the M.E. role extremely well as Jimmy Palmer, it’s not the same without Ducky.

The lab without Abby is going to feel empty. We don’t know who will take over yet, but whoever it is won’t be the same shining Gothic light that Abby is. Out of all the characters, Abby has such a unique and fun personality.

It’s been hard enough without Tony DiNozzo (although Michael Weatherly in Bull makes up for that). I struggled with the loss of Cote de Pablo’s Ziva. While Bishop and Torres have been good characters, they’re not replacements and never will be.

I’m going to continue watching and support NCIS. This is a show I’ve followed from the very beginning and I adore Gibbs, Ducky, Vance, Palmer, and McGee. I do like Bishop and Torres, and Jack is growing on me. But right now I feel like this should be the last season of the popular show.
