Werewolves had been mentioned before, but Supernatural Season 2, Episode 17 introduced them onscreen for the first time. Now they’re part of the family, but what happened at first?

Werewolves are now part of the SPN Family. After all, Garth was turned and has become an important member despite his animalistic condition. However, that wouldn’t have been the case had the Winchesters met Garth as a werewolf in Supernatural Season 2, Episode 17. In “Heart,” the creatures were introduced with lore for the first time.

While in San Francisco, Sam opens himself up fully to another woman and allows himself to love. That all goes terribly wrong when he learns of who (more like what) she is.

The Winchesters go to San Francisco know they’re likely dealing with werewolves. Unlike vampires, they know that werewolves definitely exist and the best way to kill them is with a silver bullet to the heart.

While there, they meet a lawyer’s assistant, Madison. Her boss was the most recent victim and it soon transpires that the death may be linked to her. After all, her violent ex-boyfriend was at the bar watching her and her boss, who was hitting on her, the night of her boss’ death.

By the time the Winchesters get to the apartment of the ex, a police man’s body is in the alley close by. The two decide they need to protect Madison and, after a game of rock, paper, scissors, Dean goes out to find Kurt and Sam remains with Madison.

During the night, Kurt is killed by Madison, who is unknowingly a werewolf. Dean bursts in to save Kurt, but fails and is knocked out.

The lore of a werewolf

Madison had been mugged a month earlier and during that was turned into a werewolf without realizing. Sam learns from John’s Journal that a werewolf may be turned back to human if the person who bit them is killed, so they need to find the mugger.

It turns out the mugger was Madison’s neighbor, Glen, who likely wasn’t mugging but attacking Madison in his werewolf form. That night while they all watch for the sun to rise the next day, Madison doesn’t turn, so the Winchesters assume they’ve won and Madison is human again. With that, Sam and Madison sleep with each other and it looks like everything is good until Madison turns.

It turns out werewolves need to be asleep to turn. Bobby knew that the cure wouldn’t work and admits the only way to stop a werewolf is to kill them. Madison doesn’t want to live as a monster but can’t kill herself, so begs Sam to do the dirty work. While Dean offers, Sam admits that he has to do it and, heartbreakingly, kills the woman he’s opened his heart up to.
