Supernatural Season 2, Episode 17 introduced werewolves for the first time, while opening Sam up to a new relationship. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out.

Supernatural didn’t introduce werewolves properly until Season 2, Episode 17. Now the creatures are routinely used, with the Winchesters’ friend Garth being turned but still helping the brothers now and then. “Heart” wasn’t just a chance to explore werewolf lore, though. This was a chance to open Sam up to another relationship, helping him move forward from Jessica’s death.

The episode also adapted werewolf lore slightly, introducing the hope of a cure while creating a monster that wasn’t just a human-sized wolf. It was an episode with some funny lines, but also important ones for character development. Here are the seven best lines from the episode.

I’m sorry, man, but what about a human by day, a freak animal killing machine by moonlight don’t you understand? I mean, werewolves are badass. We haven’t seen one since we were kids.

Dean couldn’t control his excitement about coming across werewolves. Unlike vampires, the Winchesters already knew about them and knew how to kill them. While they didn’t know the detail of the lore, it was clear that these creatures weren’t anything new or crazy. And it seemed like most of the lore would fit everything we already knew. Sam’s reactions to Dean’s excitement was humorous, but it was Dean’s reactions that were the best. He was like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Dude, why do you always get to hang out with the girls?

Sam and Dean have to figure out who will go after the ex and who will remain with Madison. Of course, Dean expects to stay with the “chick.” This line showed that Sam was getting ready to move on, although it did admittedly seem a little out of character, especially now looking back. It did bring us the fun rock, paper, scissors game that would be the decider, though.

It’s not an act! I am not a werewolf! There’s no such thing! It’s made up, all right? Th– They’re not real! You know they’re not real!

I feel really sorry for Madison. She was turned without realizing it and attacked people without ever meaning to. Even after being turned, she genuinely didn’t realize that monsters and creatures were real. This wasn’t an act she was putting on. Throughout the episode, I’d hope the cure would work because she was such a sweet, innocent woman mixed up in everything.

Wait, so, so, Kendall married Ethan’s father, just to get back at him?

This part was hilarious, as Sam found himself engrossed in daytime soap operas. The idea of getting engrossed in TV comes up in the future, but it’s usually Dean. This just shows that Sam can have guilty pleasures too, although he’ll never want to admit it.

Maybe I understand her… Look, there might be another way we can get the job done without having to waste her.

Dean was shocked to find out that Sam had sympathy for a monster, but it was actually empathy. This was the point that Sam was learning more and more about his powers and the Yellow-Eyed Demon, but not enough to understand where the powers really came from. There were so many doubts about who or what he was and he was able to connect with Madison because of that.

I’m not gonna lie, all right, the odds aren’t exactly in our favor. But if this goes the way I pray it does… I’ll untie you, and I’ll walk out that door, and I’ll never come back. You’ll live the rest of your life. And I’ll just be a bad memory.

Sam and Madison have a connection, but he is more than willing to walk away and never see Madison again. All he wants is to save her. It’s almost like he needs the cure for Madison to know there’s a chance that he can save himself. And later we do learn that sometimes Sam would love to pretend that it’s all a nightmare and just be a normal guy, especially in Supernatural Season 2.

It was sort of sad, actually. Glen had no clue what was going on.

The second season had a lot of development for Dean. He was slowly figuring out that not all monsters were monsters out of choice. His black and white view of the world changed and he started seeing hints of grey. Part of that was due to Sammy, but another part was due to seeing monsters as humans. It would be important for the future, especially when it came to friends getting turned into monsters.
