The Walking Dead’s bumpy Season 8 has come to an end with ratings that see over a one million viewer decline compared to other seasons.

Slowly, but surely, The Walking Dead ratings are sinking. Fans are growing tired of the far-fetched episodes and just about lost it watching Season 8 close, well, those who actually tuned in to watch. Nearly every viewer took to Twitter to complain about how TWD has jumped the shark.

The Season 8 finale, “Wrath,” is the second-least-watched finale ever. As Vulture reports, according to Nielsen: “…around 7.9 million viewers watched the AMC zombie drama the night it aired.” This is about one million less fans watching than those who caught the Season 2 finale (March 2012) live, and 3.3 million fewer than the Season 7 finale. Other episodes average 12 million viewers, so that’s a noticeable difference next to a 7.9 million rating for the episode that’s supposed to bring the biggest views.

Do keep in mind, that number is for live views. The total will grow after delayed digital and on-demand viewings are taken into account. If you watch the finale within three days, it’ll also be added in. However, there’s no denying that the audience who rushed to watch the events unfold live has significantly decreased. It speaks volumes that the eight season of a series is being watched by less fans than it was six years ago.

While it’s true that during each season any show loses and gains fans, it’s clear The Walking Dead has lost more than it has gained in Season 8. But no one is too worried. At least not yet.

TWD‘s remaining fanbase is so massive, it’s still the biggest and most-watched show on television. And it will be for a long time, even with these numbers. But AMC and the team need to get to work. How will they recover from that finale, though? Fans are not happy Team Family is broken up. Team Maggie and Team Rick are not two teams we ever thought we’d have to side with.

What’s your take? Did you watch The Walking Dead Season 8 finale live? Have you or anyone you know quit watching the series?

The Walking Dead will return with Season 9 in fall 2018.
