Supergirl returns with chaos at the DEO and an update on what Lena’s been up to lately.

Supergirl gives us a quick update on what Lena’s been doing with Sam. She’s scared of what Reign can do and we see that as she hopes that she’ll be Sam when she wakes up from the sedation.

Game night is promptly interrupted with a bar fight with a woman who can somewhat take on Supergirl. However, before that we learn that J’onn had an imaginary best friend once upon a time. It’s a nice little moment between his father and the crew, even if he couldn’t remember the imaginary friends name.

When Sam wakes up, she’s herself, but Lena still won’t let her out. She’s tracked Sam’s blackouts and figured out that they coincide with all of Reign’s appearances. My main concern with this storyline is that Lena isn’t bothering to tell anyone. She lies to James and he tells her that sometimes all you can do is hold up a mirror to someone to help them.

We basically have three storylines going at once in this episode: Kara and Mon-El training, M’yrnn’s psychic disturbances and Lena keeping Sam on lockdown. Two are happening at the same time within the DEO and things get tense. While Kara and Mon-El are training, M’yrnn starts causing chaos by having some sort of psychic hold over people at the DEO.

J’onn knows right away that his father caused the psychic anomaly, but chooses not to tell the team right away. I’m not sure what it is in this episode that makes some people think lying to their friends is a good idea. That usually doesn’t end well for anyone and I’m betting it won’t here, especially for Lena. At least for J’onn, he confides in Kara and Alex shortly after the psychic anomaly.

J’onn wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to his father. He thought he was dead for so long and then he was able to get him back. He’s not ready to lose him again and you can see the pain of the situation written all over his face.

Lena pushes Sam over the edge by saying she’ll never see Ruby again. She then shows Sam who she truly is by replaying the video footage for her. I admire how much Lena wants to help Sam, because deep down she really is a good person and cares for Ruby.

M’yrnn forgot that J’onn already told him about a specific alien species and he starts to cause even more trouble at the DEO. There’s a breach and everyone being held there is released from their cells. Here’s where the real chaos ensues and we get one big fight scene. Finally, J’onn is able to get his father to accept the inhibitor cuff and things go back to normal from there.

Other than the storyline between Lena and Sam, the plot in this episode doesn’t advance much of this season’s overall story (neither did the previous episode really). We do see that maybe Kara does have some unresolved feelings towards Mon-El, but that wasn’t a big surprise. He did come back to Earth married to someone else, after all. However, he does still help Kara learn some cape tricks. And they reconcile at the end of the episode. Also, it was nice to see Mon-El’s suit now that Winn fixed it up.

This episode did feel a bit like filler, but it was nice to see Lena for more than a few seconds. Sam doesn’t want to go anywhere near Ruby until she’s cured, which really shows how much she cares. James even points out to Lena that he has friends who save the world. However, it’s in the context of eating dinner instead of Lena asking them to help.

Supergirl airs on Monday on The CW at 8pm EST. Be sure to tune in!
