The Winchesters are caught red-handed in Supernatural Season 2, Episode 19, sending them to prison. However, there’s a very good reason they messed up.

It’s not often we see the Winchesters slip up and end up arrested. They’re usually extremely careful in their actions, which is why the opening to Supernatural Season 2, Episode 19, titled “Folsom Prison Blues,” was so surprising.

The episode opened with both brothers getting caught and Special Agent Victor Henriksen turning up. He’d been tracking them since the bank heist in Milwaukee and he was extremely happy they’d slipped up. It soon turned out that the actions weren’t quite as clumsy as it would initially seem.

The brothers are sent to Green River County Detention Center and assigned public defender Mara Daniels to help them. Mara is shocked at the crimes they’re accused of and is suspicious that they’ve been wrongly accused of some of them. However, the Winchesters don’t give her any information, as their focus is on the case.

It turns out there’s a ghost in the detention center and they needed their way in to figure out who it was. After a fight, Dean goes into solitary and has the chance to witness a killer firsthand. Sam realizes that prisoner Mark Moody’s blood has been left in a cellblock and could be tying his spirit to the prison.

Later, Dean gets into another fight, giving Sam the chance to slip away to the old cell block, where the blood-soaked mattress is. Armed with lighter fluid that Dean managed to get in a trade for cigarettes and salt, Sam is able to burn the mattress.

Figuring out the real spirit

It turns out that Mark Moody wasn’t the spirit. While in the infirmary, Dean is attacked by the spirit of a nurse. While he’s able to use salt to ward the spirit away, the spirit goes after a con next to him. After this, the Winchesters learn that the spirit is that of Nurse Glockner, who would kill prisoners in her infirmary. She was killed during a prison riot.

Dean decides to turn to Mara for help. He needs to know where Nurse Glockner is buried. She doesn’t want to help, so Dean makes it clear to Sam that he’s staying until the job is finished. Sam makes it clear they need to follow through with the pre-planned escape. As the brothers fight, a guard breaks them up and takes them to an empty room.

That guard is Deacon, an old marine buddy of John. Deacon realized there was a job for the Winchesters, so called them into help. Now he helps them escape and hands them research Mara did for Dean after all.

Henriksen isn’t happy and accuses Deacon of helping the brothers escape. He also learns that Mara passed on information, so interrogates her. She reluctantly gives up the information, while the brothers salt and burn Nurse Glockner’s remains. The FBI get to the cemetery, only to find out that Mara gave them the wrong name. The Winchesters get away to fight another day.
