Mom Season 5, Episode 19 recap
Standing up for what’s right in the face of adversity isn’t easy. Patti LuPone guest stars as Rita, the new owner of Bonnie and Christy’s apartment building, on this week’s episode of Mom.
Waiting for the results of her latest crack at the LSAT, Christy decides to take it easy and take a few days off to lounge around the house, getting in the way of whatever sexcapades Bonnie and Adam had planned.
Posing as a prospective renter, Bonnie and Christy’s TV watching was interrupted by Rita, the new building owner who was not pleased in the slightest. Hard as nails, Rita insists that Bonnie do as she says in order to raise the property value. Getting right to work, Bonnie repairs a security light outside her unit using duck tape and gum.
Trying to get back into the dating game, Christy decides to make a profile on Match. Caught by Rita trying to take a picture for the site, Christy asks for a little help. Wanting to look “pretty but not slutty” and “available but not desperate,” Rita ends up taking a pretty good shot. On her way out, Rita demands Bonnie fix the place up or they’d have to find a new place to live, before nearly getting knocked in the head by the security light.

That day at their usual table at the bistro, the ladies are baffled over Bonnie’s pushback over just doing her job. Tired of being attacked, and obviously stressed, Bonnie retreats to the bathroom. Following her in there, Marjorie forces Bonnie to reveal she truly hates her job and doesn’t want to be stuck managing the apartment complex for the rest of her life.

Giving Bonnie a hand with the repairs, Adam and Christy do what they can to check a few things off Rita’s extensive list. Showing up unexpected, Rita gives Bonnie yet another task to do, evicting anyone who is more than two months late on rent if they can’t pay it back immediately. With one tenant, who happens to be blind, behind due to paying for cancer treatment, Bonnie discovers doing her job is harder than she expected.
Forced to think fast, Bonnie invites Rita over to try to help her understand that they can’t evict a blind tenant with cancer. After she refuses to give in, Bonnie quits her job, deciding to stick up for what she believes in, despite the obvious consequences. Touched, Rita admits she has no idea what she’s doing and is honestly scared, having been recently divorced and not worked in over 30 years.
Allowing him to pay the back rent over time, Rita shows a little compassion for the sick tenant, Mr. Munson. And with Bonnie volunteering to help him out with some other expenses, she hopes to get her neighbor back on track in no time. Finally finishing work on the fountain in the apartment courtyard, Adam looks on with pride as he flips the switch and it’s in working condition.
