Supernatural Season 12 introduced a rift that led to the Apocalypse World. There was plenty of hype about this in Season 13, but it’s barely been touched. Has the world been wasted potential by the writers?

The Apocalypse World had immense potential at the start of Supernatural Season 13. This was a chance to see familiar faces in different roles. It was a chance to see what could have been had the apocalypse happened. There was the opportunity to show Mary Winchester as the hunter she could have been; the hunter that was hinted at throughout the 12th season.

Yet, we’ve barely scratched the surface there. When we do visit the Apocalypse World, it’s been more of a way to show Jack’s powers growing. We’ve heard about the atrocities of the angels but not really seen the full power and danger in full. Something has felt off; as if it was a side storyline that the writers couldn’t quite develop.

Supernatural Season 13 could have had two storylines

More from Supernatural

Supernatural may have been initially about two brothers on a road trip in search for their dad, but things have changed considerably over the years. New characters have been added as series regulars and there are beloved characters that fans want to see more of.

Mary Winchester may be one of those that some fans hate, but there are still many others who love her and want to see more. Plus, she’s grown on a lot of people now that she’s in the AU World. Then there’s Jack stuck on this side of the rift, who has the chance to grow into his powers and do something amazing.

Supernatural Season 13 could have easily focused on both the Winchesters’ world and the Apocalypse World equally. There could have been standalone episodes showing the resistance fighting against the angels, learning more about weaknesses, and seeing more of Jack’s powers growing. We’d have a chance to see more of Mary becoming a hunter and fighter, as well as that clear bond between her and Apocalypse Bobby.

What we’ve had is a few standalone episodes focused just on the Winchester brothers. While some have been important (like “A Most Holy Man” getting a necessary ingredient for the spell to open the rift), others have felt like filler episodes for the sake of it. There could have been a bit of extra focus on the Apocalyse World instead.

Will Supernatural Season 14 add more time there?

With the Winchesters now in the Apocalypse World, could we see more focus on this side of the rift? Is it possible that we’ll spend more time in the Apocalypse World? This could especially be the case since Rowena mentioned to herself that she could find a way to keep the rift open.

This would be a chance to explore the damage angels have done more. We could see why everyone is so scared. Show don’t tell is an important rule in writing that Supernatural hasn’t quite stuck to this season with the Apocalypse World. It’s time to get back to that!
