On the latest episode of Into the Badlands, we were finally introduced to Lewis Tan’s Gaius Chau. Meanwhile, Moon catches up with Sunny and The Widow meets Pilgrim.

At the start of this episode of Into the Badlands, we learn that Baron Chau has had her brother Gaius imprisoned for the past 18 months. She has him there because he and his men tried to free her cogs. She offers to release him if he’ll kill Pilgrim for her. He initially refuses, but when she starts threatens to kill his people one by one he gives in and accepts the mission.

Before he heads out on his mission, he realizes that he is in pursuit of “dark ones” and is suddenly more concerned with his task. To motivate him further, Baron Chau says that he is to come back with Pilgrim’s head or she’ll take the heads of 50 cogs.

Sunny and the blind man

Now in The Wastelands, Sunny and Bajie arrive at a hut where a bland man greets them and offers to feed them. At this point the title of the episode begins to scare you, and you were right to be as he drugs the pair and steals Henry.

Moon reaches Arthur

Moon is hot on Sunny’s trail as he reaches the camp that Sunny and Bajie just left. When there he introduces himself as the new Regent and shows them the wanted picture of Sunny. The nurse tells Moon where to find them right away but Arthur is mad when Moon begins to leave. He feels like The Widow doesn’t care about them and would like reinforcements. Moon stabs him in the shoulder and tells them to send word that they need a new commander.

MK

Back at the refugee camp, Tilda tries to convince MK not to pursue Sunny. She tells him that he has already lost his wife and is trying to raise a baby alone. Odessa initially tries to get MK to listen to Tilda but when he doesn’t want to hear it, she tells Tilda to let him go. MK says that he’ll stop being bloodthirsty when Sunny is dead.

Sunny’s past catches up again

Back in The Wastelands, Sunny and Bajie follow the blind man’s trail to an underground hatch. They go inside and find still-born babies in jars. When Sunny sees an armadillo painted on the wall he tells Bajie that they have to go, but it’s too late. Blind soldiers have surrounded them.

Sunny and Bajie are tied up, and we can see human body parts hanging on hooks around them. They tell Sunny that they eat people because everything else in The Wastelands has been poisoned. The people have Henry and they tell Sunny and Bajie that they would kill and eat them but the baby changes things. They instead offer to let them join them so that Sunny can still be with his child. However, this would mean they too would need to sacrifice their sight. They give them 24 hours to decide.

Sunny the colt

Sunny then tells Bajie that those people are there because of them. When he was Waldo’s Colt, they were sent to catch a group of renegade clippers who kidnapped and mutilated Quinn’s son. Rather than kill them, Waldo blinded one and had young Sunny blind the rest by gauging their eyes out. A flashback shows Sunny doing this to the woman who is now holding Henry.

Pilgrim

Some of Pilgrim’s pamphlets arrive in the poppy fields and they lure 200 workers to leave and join them. Lydia and The Widow decide that, rather than a show of force, they should go meet with Pilgrim to feel him out.

Nix’s mission

At the museum/temple, Nix goes to Cressida because she is worried about Castor still. Cressida tells her that she shouldn’t worry about him and that there is a new dark one to bring into the fold. She hands her a compass and sends her out to find her new brother.

The Widow and Lydia arrive at the island just as Nix is leaving. The Widow seems to recognize the device that Nix is holding but doesn’t do anything at that time. We also see Gaius lurking in the treeline across the lake.

Pilgrim and Cressida meet The Widow and Lydia

Inside, these power tandems meet for the first time and pair off. Cressida and Lydia go off in one direction while Pilgrim and the Widow stay in the main area.

The Widow questions Pilgrim’s pursuit of Azra and isn’t sure if she believes he really believes in it. Lydia is doing the same with Cressida and lets her know of her own religious background. When Cressida explains that Azra is not a paradise in heaven, but a paradise on Earth, it’s clear she’s getting through to her on some level.

The fight

At the same time, Chau and his men arrive at the shores and take out several of Pilgrim’s followers as they make their way in. He has a clean shot at Pilgrim but The Widow notices and saves him just before the arrow strikes.

Now a big fight begins. Castor goes dark and he, The Widow, and Pilgrim take out several of Chau’s men. Cressida and Lydia, though not really fighters, manage to take out another in their area.

Castor then sets his sights on Chau and the two have an epic battle. Castor is still dark though and he gets the upper hand on Chau. He stabs Chau through his back but rather than delivering the death-blow, he stops and instead heads off after The Widow. Pilgrim sees this, grabs him before he strikes, and chants something. The darkness leaves Castor’s eyes and he collapses.

Truce

The Widow asks Pilgrim how he did this and he simply tells her that he has a gift. Pilgrim and Cressida accuse she and Lydia of setting this attack up as a way to “save them” and secure their friendship. The Widow refutes this claim and proves she’s innocent by showing him a brand on one of Chau’s soldiers. Only Baron Chau brands her people. Pilgrim asks them to join their crusade but The Widow asks him to simply stop recruiting her people and they won’t have problems.

Moon and Sunny

Back in The Wastelands, Moon finds the blind man who drugged Sunny and he manages to get Moon as well.

Sunny and the blind lady who has Henry talk about his plans to get Henry to the witch and she tells him that the witch won’t help. She also tells Sunny a different story about how she ended up blind. She says that she and her husband were clippers for rival barons and tried to run off together. Her husband’s baron, Quinn, caught up to them however and took their eyes. She senses that Sunny understands and he tells her his story of love and how his baron killed his wife. He then takes the extra step of explaining that he was the one that took her eyes, much to the dismay of Bajie.

Sunny seemed to think this was a good time for honesty but it just doomed them to be eaten. This is when Moon is brought in just to make things more interesting.

Sunny’s escape

The blind soldiers made the mistake of leaving Moon’s hand in the room and Sunny manages to get it over to him. He frees himself, then Bajie but doesn’t free Moon because he is still set on fighting him. Sunny and Bajie take out all of the blind soldiers (including a backward frog splash by Bajie to crush two of them) before approaching the woman. She knows that the others have been killed and hands Henry over to sunny. He offers her to come with them but she refuses, opting to take her own life instead. We don’t see this happen on-screen.

Sun and Moon

Sunny finally frees Moon but when they reach the surface, he refuses to fight him. He tells Moon the story of how those soldiers became blind and tells him he refuses to continue the cycle of bloodshed in The Badlands. He gives Moon his sword back and tells him that if he decides to kill him, that his son is to become his responsibility.

Moon resists the urge to kill Sunny and says that he won’t deny Henry the chance to grow up with his father the way his son was denied this. He also tells Sunny his honor has been satisfied so he is no longer on a mission to kill him. He does warn Sunny that The Widow still wants his head so he shouldn’t come back to The Badlands.

Bajie is suddenly starting to believe in miracles again after the pair dodged death twice in one day.

Summary

This was yet another action packed episode for Into the Badlands. The writers really don’t give you time to breathe but that’s part of what makes the show great. Lewis Tan’s introduction as Gaius Chau did not disappoint. It’s going to be interesting to see what role he plays going forward. He seems to disagree with the way his sister runs things which could mean an alliance with The Widow. At the same time, we can expect MK to meet Pilgrim in the next episode and this could lead to him having more control over his gift. We also have to find out what is going on with Henry so we can expect yet another loaded episode next week.

Into the Badlands returns next Sunday at 10/9 Central on AMC.
