Designated Survivor deserves a third season, and ABC needs to hear it

It was all too unfortunate the way it went down with Designated Survivor. The show was canceled after its second season, but it ended for all the wrong reasons.

Per deadline.com, Designated Survivor “did well in delayed viewing but its Live+Same Day delivery in the 10 PM hour had become challenging.” Say what? In the year 2018, we’re having a discussion about a show’s relevance simply because people don’t want to watch commercials anymore? TV networks need to catch up with the times.

Of course, the live broadcast isn’t going to do well in a day and age when people aren’t willing to watch burger or perfume commercials in the middle of a show. Why would anyone wish to do that when inexpensive streaming services provide the same thing without distractions?

Wait about a day and the show would turn up on Hulu. But right now, an amazing show with an extremely talented cast is getting canned because not enough people were willing to sit through commercials.

What is the solution? TV networks need to realize that streaming services are the future, and they need to invest in providing television shows on their own such platforms after the shows are aired on television. In the business world, you either adapt or you get flushed out. And right now, the typical, old-fashioned model where a show is constantly interrupted by commercials is the way of the past — it’s history.

True competitors will find a way to stay in the game, while networks who stay in the past will go extinct. Disney, one of the most elite companies in the world as far as staying current, has already planned to put out a streaming service, so why can’t tv networks do so as well?

There is no need to cancel good tv shows if networks would simply evolve — now. They need to have an eye towards the future (or really, the present), as tv commercials, and possibly even tv itself is no longer relevant.
