What happens and what does it mean? Let’s recap the final moments along with our thoughts…

Annie freaks out when she finds Ellen’s, her mother, body in the attic. And to top it all off, Ellen’s head is missing. Annie also finds photographs and quickly connects the dots. Annie’s husband, Steve, believes Annie has gone crazy. Crazy does run in the family, after all. To prove she’s not lying, Annie throws Charlie’s sketchbook in the fire. Steve’s entire body goes up in flames. Annie stares at Steve in shock, but her expression quickly changes to indifferent, you can even almost see a smirk on her face.

It’s now obvious Annie is possessed, presumably by Paimon. How long has she been possessed for? My guess is it began when Annie tried to reach out to Charlie with the suggestion of Joan. Annie’s mother has cursed the family.  She tried to take over Charlie’s body for her “husband,” the demon Paimon, one of the three rulers of hell (Joan later reveals). But after Charlie’s death, the new target is Peter.

Peter finds his father’s body, and soon the fully possessed Annie chases a him up the attic. Annie pounds her head on the door. Peter searches the attic as he begs his mother to stop, apologizing repeatedly for everything he has done. He finds a photo of him with his eyes punched out. Viewers notice Ellen’s body that was there before is gone. Peter then turns to find his mother hovering over him, as well as several people (all naked) in the room. He jumps out of a window and hits the ground.

Did the fall kill him? I’m not sure. He gets up, looking confused, and follows his mother’s headless body (she cut if off herself in the attic) to the tree house. Inside, there are more naked worshipers of Paimon. And at one end of the treehouse is Charlie’s head on top of a statue of Paimon, with a crown.

In front of Peter, everyone begins to bow down to him, including a headless Annie and Ellen. Or is it Annie and Charlie? Without their heads, I’m not even sure. The crown is removed from Charlie’s head and placed on Peter, as Joan tells Peter he is the new host for Paimon.

Is Peter really fully possessed, though? I’m not so sure. Peter (or Paimon) appears more confused, and even a bit terrified, than anything. Wouldn’t the demon instead be pleased and relieved to have a host?
